The Parable of the Watchful Servants
Jesus urges the disciples to have their belts fastened and their lamps burning, telling a parable about servants waiting for their master returning from a wedding feast. Blessed are those found awake when he comes—then the master himself will gird himself and serve them. Like a thief, the Son of Man comes at an hour no one expects, so they must be ready. Luke 12:35-40
Lucas 12,35-40
35Be dressed and ready for service, and keep your lamps burning,
Ἔστωσαν ὑμῶν αἱ ὀσφύες περιεζωσμέναι καὶ οἱ λύχνοι καιόμενοι,
36like those waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can open the door for him at once.
καὶ ὑμεῖς ὅμοιοι ἀνθρώποις προσδεχομένοις τὸν κύριον ἑαυτῶν πότε ἀναλύσῃ ἐκ τῶν γάμων, ἵνα ἐλθόντος καὶ κρούσαντος εὐθέως ἀνοίξωσιν αὐτῷ.
37Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself for service, have them recline at the table, and come and wait on them.
μακάριοι οἱ δοῦλοι ἐκεῖνοι, οὓς ἐλθὼν ὁ κύριος εὑρήσει γρηγοροῦντας· ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι περιζώσεται καὶ ἀνακλινεῖ αὐτοὺς καὶ παρελθὼν διακονήσει αὐτοῖς.
38Whether he comes in the second watch of the night or the third, blessed are those servants he finds ready.
⸂κἂν ἐν τῇ δευτέρᾳ κἂν⸃ ἐν τῇ τρίτῃ φυλακῇ ἔλθῃ καὶ εὕρῃ οὕτως, μακάριοί ⸀εἰσιν ἐκεῖνοι.
39But understand this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
Τοῦτο δὲ γινώσκετε ὅτι εἰ ᾔδει ὁ οἰκοδεσπότης ποίᾳ ὥρᾳ ὁ κλέπτης ἔρχεται, ⸂οὐκ ἂν⸃ ἀφῆκεν ⸀διορυχθῆναι τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ.
40You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."
καὶ ⸀ὑμεῖς γίνεσθε ἕτοιμοι, ὅτι ᾗ ὥρᾳ οὐ δοκεῖτε ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἔρχεται.
