The Parable of the Seats at the Table
Jesus tells a parable to the guests who chose the places of honor at the table. He advises them to take the lowest seat at a wedding, so that the host may invite them to move higher up, and they avoid being asked to give up their place in shame. He concludes with the principle that whoever exalts themselves will be humbled, and whoever humbles themselves will be exalted.
Lucas 14,7-11
7Noticing how the guests were choosing the places of honor, he told them this parable:
Ἔλεγεν δὲ πρὸς τοὺς κεκλημένους παραβολήν, ἐπέχων πῶς τὰς πρωτοκλισίας ἐξελέγοντο, λέγων πρὸς αὐτούς·
8"When you are invited to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for someone more distinguished than you may have been invited.
Ὅταν κληθῇς ὑπό τινος εἰς γάμους, μὴ κατακλιθῇς εἰς τὴν πρωτοκλισίαν, μήποτε ἐντιμότερός σου ᾖ κεκλημένος ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ
9Then the host who invited you both will come and say to you, 'Give this man your place,' and you will be humiliated as you move to the lowest place.
καὶ ἐλθὼν ὁ σὲ καὶ αὐτὸν καλέσας ἐρεῖ σοι· Δὸς τούτῳ τόπον, καὶ τότε ἄρξῃ μετὰ αἰσχύνης τὸν ἔσχατον τόπον κατέχειν.
10Instead, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place, so that when your host comes he will say to you, 'Friend, move up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests.
ἀλλʼ ὅταν κληθῇς πορευθεὶς ἀνάπεσε εἰς τὸν ἔσχατον τόπον, ἵνα ὅταν ἔλθῃ ὁ κεκληκώς σε ⸀ἐρεῖ σοι· Φίλε, προσανάβηθι ἀνώτερον· τότε ἔσται σοι δόξα ἐνώπιον ⸀πάντων τῶν συνανακειμένων σοι.
11For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."
ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ὑψῶν ἑαυτὸν ταπεινωθήσεται καὶ ὁ ταπεινῶν ἑαυτὸν ὑψωθήσεται.
