Law on Idolatry and the Central Court

Moses gives laws on how idolatry is to be handled: Anyone who worships other gods, the sun, the moon, or the host of heaven shall, after thorough investigation, be stoned to death at the city gate. Two or three witnesses are required to pronounce a death sentence, and the witnesses must be the first to lay hands on the guilty person. Difficult legal cases are to be brought to the Levitical priests and the judge in the place the Lord chooses, and the people must follow their ruling without turning aside to the right or to the left. Anyone who defies this authority shall die, so that all the people will hear it and fear.

Deuteronomio 17,2-13

2If a man or woman among you, in one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you, is found doing what is evil in the eyes of the LORD your God, violating his covenant,
3and has gone and served other gods and bowed down to them, or to the sun or the moon or any of the host of heaven—something I never commanded—
4and if it is reported to you and you hear of it, then investigate the matter thoroughly. If it is true and confirmed that such a detestable thing has been done in Israel,
5then bring out to your gates the man or the woman who has done this evil thing, and stone that man or woman to death.
6On the testimony of two or three witnesses a person shall be put to death; no one shall be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.
7The hands of the witnesses shall be the first raised against him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So you shall purge the evil from among you.
8If a case is too difficult for you to judge—cases of bloodshed, of legal rights, or of bodily injury—any dispute within your towns, then rise and go up to the place the LORD your God will choose.
9Go to the Levitical priests and to the judge who is in office at that time. Bring your inquiry to them, and they will give you the verdict.
10You must act according to the decision they give you from that place the LORD will choose. Be careful to do everything they instruct you.
11Act according to the instruction they give you and the judgment they declare to you. Do not turn aside from what they tell you, to the right or to the left.
12Anyone who acts arrogantly and refuses to listen to the priest who ministers there before the LORD your God, or to the judge, must die. So you shall purge the evil from Israel.
13Then all the people will hear and be afraid, and will not act arrogantly again.
