Noah's Flood and the Destruction of Sodom
Peter highlights God's judgment on the old world through the flood and over Sodom and Gomorrah, while emphasizing God's ability to rescue the righteous like Noah and Lot. These stories serve as a warning against ungodliness and as proof that the Lord knows how to deliver the godly from trials, while keeping the unrighteous reserved for the day of judgment.
2 Pedro 2,4-9
4For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them down to hell in chains of darkness, handing them over to be kept for judgment;
5and if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought the flood upon a world of the ungodly;
6and if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ruin, reducing them to ashes and making them an example of what is coming to the ungodly;
7and if he rescued righteous Lot, worn down by the depraved conduct of the lawless—
8for that righteous man, living among them, was tormented in his righteous soul day after day by the lawless deeds he saw and heard—
9then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trial and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment,
