Presumptuous Attack and Defeat at Hormah
After the Lord had commanded the people to turn toward the wilderness, they acknowledged their sin but presumptuously went up into the hill country to fight against the Lord's command. The Amorites came out, pursued them like bees, and struck them down in Seir as far as Hormah. The people wept before the Lord, but he did not listen to them, and they remained for a long time at Kadesh.
Deuteronomio 1,40-46
40But as for you, turn around and set out toward the wilderness by way of the Red Sea." [Footnote: Hebrew Yam Suph, also rendered "Sea of Reeds."]
וְאַתֶּ֖ם פְּנ֣וּ לָכֶ֑ם וּסְע֥וּ הַמִּדְבָּ֖רָה דֶּ֥רֶךְ יַם־סֽוּף׃
41Then you answered me, "We have sinned against the LORD. We will go up and fight, just as the LORD our God commanded us." And each of you strapped on his weapons, thinking it an easy thing to go up into the hill country.
וַֽתַּעֲנ֣וּ ׀ וַתֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלַ֗י חָטָאנוּ֮ לַֽיהוָה֒ אֲנַ֤חְנוּ נַעֲלֶה֙ וְנִלְחַ֔מְנוּ כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּ֖נוּ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ וַֽתַּחְגְּר֗וּ אִ֚ישׁ אֶת־כְּלֵ֣י מִלְחַמְתּ֔וֹ וַתָּהִ֖ינוּ לַעֲלֹ֥ת הָהָֽרָה׃
42But the LORD said to me, "Tell them: Do not go up and do not fight, for I am not among you, or you will be struck down before your enemies."
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֵלַ֗י אֱמֹ֤ר לָהֶם֙ לֹ֤א תֽ͏ַעֲלוּ֙ וְלֹא־תִלָּ֣חֲמ֔וּ כִּ֥י אֵינֶ֖נִּי בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֑ם וְלֹא֙ תִּנָּ֣גְפ֔וּ לִפְנֵ֖י אֹיְבֵיכֶֽם׃
43So I told you, but you would not listen. You rebelled against the LORD's command and in your arrogance you marched into the hill country.
וָאֲדַבֵּ֥ר אֲלֵיכֶ֖ם וְלֹ֣א שְׁמַעְתֶּ֑ם וַתַּמְרוּ֙ אֶת־פִּ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וַתָּזִ֖דוּ וַתַּעֲל֥וּ הָהָֽרָה׃
44The Amorites who lived in those hills came out against you; they chased you like a swarm of bees and beat you down in Seir, all the way to Hormah.
וַיֵּצֵ֨א הָאֱמֹרִ֜י הַיֹּשֵׁ֨ב בָּהָ֤ר הַהוּא֙ לִקְרַאתְכֶ֔ם וַיִּרְדְּפ֣וּ אֶתְכֶ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּעֲשֶׂ֖ינָה הַדְּבֹרִ֑ים וֽ͏ַיַּכְּת֥וּ אֶתְכֶ֛ם בְּשֵׂעִ֖יר עַד־חָרְמָֽה׃
45You came back and wept before the LORD, but the LORD would not listen to your voice or pay attention to you.
וַתָּשֻׁ֥בוּ וַתִּבְכּ֖וּ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וְלֹֽא־שָׁמַ֤ע יְהוָה֙ בְּקֹ֣לְכֶ֔ם וְלֹ֥א הֶאֱזִ֖ין אֲלֵיכֶֽם׃
46So you stayed at Kadesh a long time—all those days you spent there.
וַתֵּשְׁב֥וּ בְקָדֵ֖שׁ יָמִ֣ים רַבִּ֑ים כַּיָּמִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְשַׁבְתֶּֽם׃
