Paul in Rome
Paul arrives in Rome, meets the leading Jews, and proclaims the kingdom of God from his rented home for two years with full boldness and without hindrance.
Hechos 28,11-31
11After three months we put out to sea in an Alexandrian ship that had wintered at the island, with the Twin Brothers as its figurehead.
Μετὰ δὲ τρεῖς μῆνας ⸀ἀνήχθημεν ἐν πλοίῳ παρακεχειμακότι ἐν τῇ νήσῳ Ἀλεξανδρίνῳ, παρασήμῳ Διοσκούροις.
12We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days.
καὶ καταχθέντες εἰς Συρακούσας ἐπεμείναμεν ἡμέρας τρεῖς,
13From there we weighed anchor and came to Rhegium. A day later a south wind came up, and on the second day we reached Puteoli,
ὅθεν ⸀περιελόντες κατηντήσαμεν εἰς Ῥήγιον. καὶ μετὰ μίαν ἡμέραν ἐπιγενομένου νότου δευτεραῖοι ἤλθομεν εἰς Ποτιόλους,
14where we found brothers who invited us to stay with them for seven days. And so we came to Rome.
οὗ εὑρόντες ἀδελφοὺς παρεκλήθημεν ⸀παρʼ αὐτοῖς ἐπιμεῖναι ἡμέρας ἑπτά· καὶ οὕτως εἰς τὴν Ῥώμην ἤλθαμεν.
15The brothers there had heard about us, and they came out as far as the Forum of Appius and Three Taverns to meet us. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.
κἀκεῖθεν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ ἀκούσαντες τὰ περὶ ἡμῶν ⸀ἦλθαν εἰς ἀπάντησιν ἡμῖν ἄχρι Ἀππίου Φόρου καὶ Τριῶν Ταβερνῶν, οὓς ἰδὼν ὁ Παῦλος εὐχαριστήσας τῷ θεῷ ἔλαβε θάρσος.
16When we entered Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with the soldier who guarded him.
Ὅτε δὲ ⸀εἰσήλθομεν εἰς Ῥώμην, ⸂ἐπετράπη τῷ Παύλῳ⸃ μένειν καθʼ ἑαυτὸν σὺν τῷ φυλάσσοντι αὐτὸν στρατιώτῃ.
17Three days later he called together the leading men of the Jews. When they had assembled, he said to them: "Brothers, though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, I was handed over as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
Ἐγένετο δὲ μετὰ ἡμέρας τρεῖς συγκαλέσασθαι ⸀αὐτὸν τοὺς ὄντας τῶν Ἰουδαίων πρώτους· συνελθόντων δὲ αὐτῶν ἔλεγεν πρὸς αὐτούς· ⸂Ἐγώ, ἄνδρες ἀδελφοί⸃, οὐδὲν ἐναντίον ποιήσας τῷ λαῷ ἢ τοῖς ἔθεσι τοῖς πατρῴοις δέσμιος ἐξ Ἱεροσολύμων παρεδόθην εἰς τὰς χεῖρας τῶν Ῥωμαίων,
18They examined me and wanted to release me, because there was no ground for a death sentence in my case.
οἵτινες ἀνακρίναντές με ἐβούλοντο ἀπολῦσαι διὰ τὸ μηδεμίαν αἰτίαν θανάτου ὑπάρχειν ἐν ἐμοί·
19But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar—not that I had any charge to bring against my own nation.
ἀντιλεγόντων δὲ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἠναγκάσθην ἐπικαλέσασθαι Καίσαρα, οὐχ ὡς τοῦ ἔθνους μου ἔχων τι ⸀κατηγορεῖν.
20That is why I asked to see you and speak with you. It is because of the hope of Israel that I am wearing this chain."
διὰ ταύτην οὖν τὴν αἰτίαν παρεκάλεσα ὑμᾶς ἰδεῖν καὶ προσλαλῆσαι, ἕνεκεν γὰρ τῆς ἐλπίδος τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ τὴν ἅλυσιν ταύτην περίκειμαι.
21They answered him, "We have received no letters about you from Judea, and none of the brothers who have come here has reported or said anything bad about you.
οἱ δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν εἶπαν· Ἡμεῖς οὔτε γράμματα περὶ σοῦ ἐδεξάμεθα ἀπὸ τῆς Ἰουδαίας, οὔτε παραγενόμενός τις τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἀπήγγειλεν ἢ ἐλάλησέν τι περὶ σοῦ πονηρόν.
22But we would like to hear from you what you think, for we know that this sect is spoken against everywhere."
ἀξιοῦμεν δὲ παρὰ σοῦ ἀκοῦσαι ἃ φρονεῖς, περὶ μὲν γὰρ τῆς αἱρέσεως ταύτης γνωστὸν ⸂ἡμῖν ἐστιν⸃ ὅτι πανταχοῦ ἀντιλέγεται.
23So they set a day for him, and they came to him at his lodging in even greater numbers. From morning until evening he laid out his case, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them about Jesus from the Law of Moses and the Prophets.
Ταξάμενοι δὲ αὐτῷ ἡμέραν ⸀ἧκον πρὸς αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν ξενίαν πλείονες, οἷς ἐξετίθετο διαμαρτυρόμενος τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ πείθων τε ⸀αὐτοὺς περὶ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἀπό τε τοῦ νόμου Μωϋσέως καὶ τῶν προφητῶν ἀπὸ πρωῒ ἕως ἑσπέρας.
24Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe.
καὶ οἱ μὲν ἐπείθοντο τοῖς λεγομένοις οἱ δὲ ἠπίστουν,
25They disagreed among themselves and began to leave, after Paul had made this one statement: "The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your fathers through the prophet Isaiah when he said:
ἀσύμφωνοι δὲ ὄντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους ἀπελύοντο, εἰπόντος τοῦ Παύλου ῥῆμα ἓν ὅτι Καλῶς τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ἐλάλησεν διὰ Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας ⸀ὑμῶν
26'Go to this people and say: You will listen and listen, but never understand; you will look and look, but never see.
⸀λέγων· Πορεύθητι πρὸς τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον καὶ εἰπόν· Ἀκοῇ ἀκούσετε καὶ οὐ μὴ συνῆτε, καὶ βλέποντες βλέψετε καὶ οὐ μὴ ἴδητε·
27For the heart of this people has grown dull; they hear with difficulty, and they have shut their eyes—so that they may not see with their eyes, or hear with their ears, or understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.'
ἐπαχύνθη γὰρ ἡ καρδία τοῦ λαοῦ τούτου, καὶ τοῖς ὠσὶν βαρέως ἤκουσαν, καὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν ἐκάμμυσαν· μήποτε ἴδωσιν τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς καὶ τοῖς ὠσὶν ἀκούσωσιν καὶ τῇ καρδίᾳ συνῶσιν καὶ ἐπιστρέψωσιν, καὶ ἰάσομαι αὐτούς.
28Therefore know this: God's salvation has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen."
γνωστὸν οὖν ⸂ἔστω ὑμῖν⸃ ὅτι τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἀπεστάλη ⸀τοῦτο τὸ σωτήριον τοῦ θεοῦ· αὐτοὶ καὶ ⸀ἀκούσονται.
29When he had said this, the Jews left, arguing heatedly among themselves.
Καὶ ταῦτα αὐτοῦ εἰπόντος, ἀπῆλθον οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, πολλὴν ἔχοντες ἐν ἑαυτοῖς συζήτησιν.
30Paul stayed there two whole years in his own rented quarters, and he welcomed all who came to him,
⸀Ἐνέμεινεν ⸀δὲ διετίαν ὅλην ἐν ἰδίῳ μισθώματι, καὶ ἀπεδέχετο πάντας τοὺς εἰσπορευομένους πρὸς αὐτόν,
31proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with complete boldness, and without hindrance.
κηρύσσων τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ διδάσκων τὰ περὶ τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μετὰ πάσης παρρησίας ἀκωλύτως.
