Paul's confrontation with the false brothers in Jerusalem
Paul travels to Jerusalem to defend the truth of the gospel and refuses to let Titus be circumcised, despite pressure from false brothers. The recognized apostles (James, Cephas, and John) acknowledge Paul's calling to the Gentiles and give him the right hand as a sign of fellowship.
Gálatas 2,1-10
1Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along as well.
Ἔπειτα διὰ δεκατεσσάρων ἐτῶν πάλιν ἀνέβην εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα μετὰ Βαρναβᾶ συμπαραλαβὼν καὶ Τίτον·
2I went up in response to a revelation, and I laid before them the gospel I proclaim among the Gentiles — privately, though, before those held in esteem — to make sure I was not running, or had not run, in vain.
ἀνέβην δὲ κατὰ ἀποκάλυψιν· καὶ ἀνεθέμην αὐτοῖς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον ὃ κηρύσσω ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, κατʼ ἰδίαν δὲ τοῖς δοκοῦσιν, μή πως εἰς κενὸν τρέχω ἢ ἔδραμον.
3Yet not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, Greek though he was.
ἀλλʼ οὐδὲ Τίτος ὁ σὺν ἐμοί, Ἕλλην ὤν, ἠναγκάσθη περιτμηθῆναι·
4This came up because of the false brothers who had been smuggled in — men who slipped in to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might make us slaves.
διὰ δὲ τοὺς παρεισάκτους ψευδαδέλφους, οἵτινες παρεισῆλθον κατασκοπῆσαι τὴν ἐλευθερίαν ἡμῶν ἣν ἔχομεν ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ, ἵνα ἡμᾶς ⸀καταδουλώσουσιν—
5To them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might remain with you.
οἷς οὐδὲ πρὸς ὥραν εἴξαμεν τῇ ὑποταγῇ, ἵνα ἡ ἀλήθεια τοῦ εὐαγγελίου διαμείνῃ πρὸς ὑμᾶς.
6And from those reputed to be something — what they once were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality — those of repute added nothing to me.
ἀπὸ δὲ τῶν δοκούντων εἶναί τι— ὁποῖοί ποτε ἦσαν οὐδέν μοι διαφέρει· πρόσωπον ⸀θεὸς ἀνθρώπου οὐ λαμβάνει— ἐμοὶ γὰρ οἱ δοκοῦντες οὐδὲν προσανέθεντο,
7On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel for the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been for the circumcised.
ἀλλὰ τοὐναντίον ἰδόντες ὅτι πεπίστευμαι τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς ἀκροβυστίας καθὼς Πέτρος τῆς περιτομῆς,
8For the one who worked through Peter in his mission to the circumcised worked also through me for the Gentiles.
ὁ γὰρ ἐνεργήσας Πέτρῳ εἰς ἀποστολὴν τῆς περιτομῆς ἐνήργησεν καὶ ἐμοὶ εἰς τὰ ἔθνη,
9And recognizing the grace given to me, James, Cephas, and John, reputed to be pillars, gave the right hand of fellowship to me and Barnabas, agreeing that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.
καὶ γνόντες τὴν χάριν τὴν δοθεῖσάν μοι, Ἰάκωβος καὶ Κηφᾶς καὶ Ἰωάννης, οἱ δοκοῦντες στῦλοι εἶναι, δεξιὰς ἔδωκαν ἐμοὶ καὶ Βαρναβᾷ κοινωνίας, ἵνα ⸀ἡμεῖς εἰς τὰ ἔθνη, αὐτοὶ δὲ εἰς τὴν περιτομήν·
10They asked only that we remember the poor — the very thing I was eager to do.
μόνον τῶν πτωχῶν ἵνα μνημονεύωμεν, ὃ καὶ ἐσπούδασα αὐτὸ τοῦτο ποιῆσαι.
