The Prophecy about the Destruction of the Temple
Jesus predicts the total destruction of the temple and describes the coming sufferings, persecutions, and signs before the Son of Man comes in glory. He warns the disciples to be watchful and persevere until the end.
Lucas 21,5-36
5As some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, he said,
Καί τινων λεγόντων περὶ τοῦ ἱεροῦ, ὅτι λίθοις καλοῖς καὶ ἀναθήμασιν κεκόσμηται εἶπεν·
6"As for what you see here, the days will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."
Ταῦτα ἃ θεωρεῖτε, ἐλεύσονται ἡμέραι ἐν αἷς οὐκ ἀφεθήσεται λίθος ἐπὶ ⸀λίθῳ ὃς οὐ καταλυθήσεται.
7They asked him, "Teacher, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?"
Ἐπηρώτησαν δὲ αὐτὸν λέγοντες· Διδάσκαλε, πότε οὖν ταῦτα ἔσται, καὶ τί τὸ σημεῖον ὅταν μέλλῃ ταῦτα γίνεσθαι;
8He said, "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them.
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· Βλέπετε μὴ πλανηθῆτε· πολλοὶ γὰρ ἐλεύσονται ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματί μου ⸀λέγοντες· Ἐγώ εἰμι καί· Ὁ καιρὸς ἤγγικεν· ⸀μὴ πορευθῆτε ὀπίσω αὐτῶν.
9When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be terrified. These things must happen first, but the end will not come at once."
ὅταν δὲ ἀκούσητε πολέμους καὶ ἀκαταστασίας, μὴ πτοηθῆτε· δεῖ γὰρ ταῦτα γενέσθαι πρῶτον, ἀλλʼ οὐκ εὐθέως τὸ τέλος.
10Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
τότε ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς· Ἐγερθήσεται ἔθνος ἐπʼ ἔθνος καὶ βασιλεία ἐπὶ βασιλείαν,
11There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues, and there will be terrifying sights and great signs from heaven.
σεισμοί τε μεγάλοι ⸂καὶ κατὰ τόπους⸃ ⸂λιμοὶ καὶ λοιμοὶ⸃ ἔσονται, φόβητρά τε καὶ ⸂σημεῖα ἀπʼ οὐρανοῦ μεγάλα⸃ ἔσται.
12But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name.
Πρὸ δὲ τούτων πάντων ἐπιβαλοῦσιν ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν καὶ διώξουσιν, παραδιδόντες εἰς ⸀τὰς συναγωγὰς καὶ φυλακάς, ⸀ἀπαγομένους ἐπὶ βασιλεῖς καὶ ἡγεμόνας ἕνεκεν τοῦ ὀνόματός μου·
13This will give you an opportunity to bear witness.
⸀ἀποβήσεται ὑμῖν εἰς μαρτύριον.
14So make up your minds not to prepare your defense beforehand,
⸀θέτε οὖν ⸂ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις⸃ ὑμῶν μὴ προμελετᾶν ἀπολογηθῆναι,
15for I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.
ἐγὼ γὰρ δώσω ὑμῖν στόμα καὶ σοφίαν ᾗ οὐ δυνήσονται ⸂ἀντιστῆναι ἢ ἀντειπεῖν⸃ ⸀ἅπαντες οἱ ἀντικείμενοι ὑμῖν.
16You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death.
παραδοθήσεσθε δὲ καὶ ὑπὸ γονέων καὶ ⸂ἀδελφῶν καὶ συγγενῶν καὶ φίλων⸃, καὶ θανατώσουσιν ἐξ ὑμῶν,
17Everyone will hate you because of my name.
καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου.
18Yet not a hair of your head will perish.
καὶ θρὶξ ἐκ τῆς κεφαλῆς ὑμῶν οὐ μὴ ἀπόληται.
19By your endurance, gain your lives.
ἐν τῇ ὑπομονῇ ὑμῶν ⸀κτήσασθε τὰς ψυχὰς ὑμῶν.
20"When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near.
Ὅταν δὲ ἴδητε κυκλουμένην ὑπὸ ⸀στρατοπέδων Ἰερουσαλήμ, τότε γνῶτε ὅτι ἤγγικεν ἡ ἐρήμωσις αὐτῆς.
21Then let those in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the countryside not enter it,
τότε οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ φευγέτωσαν εἰς τὰ ὄρη, καὶ οἱ ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς ἐκχωρείτωσαν, καὶ οἱ ἐν ταῖς χώραις μὴ εἰσερχέσθωσαν εἰς αὐτήν,
22for these are days of vengeance, when all that is written will be fulfilled.
ὅτι ἡμέραι ἐκδικήσεως αὗταί εἰσιν τοῦ πλησθῆναι πάντα τὰ γεγραμμένα.
23How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! For there will be great distress on the land and wrath against this people.
⸀οὐαὶ ταῖς ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσαις καὶ ταῖς θηλαζούσαις ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις· ἔσται γὰρ ἀνάγκη μεγάλη ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ⸀ὀργὴ τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ,
24They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
καὶ πεσοῦνται στόματι μαχαίρης καὶ αἰχμαλωτισθήσονται εἰς ⸂τὰ ἔθνη πάντα⸃, καὶ Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἔσται πατουμένη ὑπὸ ἐθνῶν, ἄχρι ⸀οὗ ⸀πληρωθῶσιν καιροὶ ἐθνῶν.
25"There will be signs in the sun, the moon and the stars, and on the earth nations will be in anguish, bewildered by the roaring and surging of the sea.
Καὶ ⸀ἔσονται σημεῖα ἐν ἡλίῳ καὶ σελήνῃ καὶ ἄστροις, καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς συνοχὴ ἐθνῶν ἐν ἀπορίᾳ ⸀ἤχους θαλάσσης καὶ σάλου,
26People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
ἀποψυχόντων ἀνθρώπων ἀπὸ φόβου καὶ προσδοκίας τῶν ἐπερχομένων τῇ οἰκουμένῃ, αἱ γὰρ δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρανῶν σαλευθήσονται.
27Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
καὶ τότε ὄψονται τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐρχόμενον ἐν νεφέλῃ μετὰ δυνάμεως καὶ δόξης πολλῆς.
28When these things begin to happen, stand up and lift your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."
ἀρχομένων δὲ τούτων γίνεσθαι ἀνακύψατε καὶ ἐπάρατε τὰς κεφαλὰς ὑμῶν, διότι ἐγγίζει ἡ ἀπολύτρωσις ὑμῶν.
29He told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees.
Καὶ εἶπεν παραβολὴν αὐτοῖς· Ἴδετε τὴν συκῆν καὶ πάντα τὰ δένδρα·
30As soon as they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near.
ὅταν προβάλωσιν ἤδη, βλέποντες ἀφʼ ἑαυτῶν γινώσκετε ὅτι ἤδη ἐγγὺς τὸ θέρος ἐστίν·
31So also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.
οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς, ὅταν ἴδητε ταῦτα γινόμενα, γινώσκετε ὅτι ἐγγύς ἐστιν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ.
32Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.
ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ ἡ γενεὰ αὕτη ἕως ἂν πάντα γένηται.
33Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
ὁ οὐρανὸς καὶ ἡ γῆ ⸀παρελεύσονται, οἱ δὲ λόγοι μου οὐ μὴ παρελεύσονται.
34"Be on your guard, so that your hearts are not weighed down by carousing and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and so that day does not come upon you suddenly, like a trap.
Προσέχετε δὲ ἑαυτοῖς μήποτε βαρηθῶσιν ⸂ὑμῶν αἱ καρδίαι⸃ ἐν κραιπάλῃ καὶ μέθῃ καὶ μερίμναις βιωτικαῖς, καὶ ⸂ἐπιστῇ ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς αἰφνίδιος⸃ ἡ ἡμέρα ἐκείνη
35For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth.
ὡς παγίς· ⸂ἐπεισελεύσεται γὰρ⸃ ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς καθημένους ἐπὶ πρόσωπον πάσης τῆς γῆς.
36Stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all that is about to happen, and to stand before the Son of Man."
ἀγρυπνεῖτε ⸀δὲ ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ δεόμενοι ἵνα ⸀κατισχύσητε ἐκφυγεῖν ⸀ταῦτα πάντα τὰ μέλλοντα γίνεσθαι, καὶ σταθῆναι ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου.
