Amon served as the city's chief in Samaria – a high-ranking administrative position equivalent to a governor – at the time when King Ahab ruled the northern kingdom of Israel. He appears in the biblical narrative when Ahab decides to imprison the prophet Micaiah, son of Imlah, who had foretold the king's defeat in battle at Ramoth Gilead. The king ordered that Micaiah be handed over to Amon and to Zedekiah, an official with the title "king's son," and kept imprisoned on a diet of bread and water. Amon's involvement in this event illustrates how the political and administrative machinery was used to suppress prophetic truth. Despite the attempt to silence the prophet, Micaiah's words of judgment came true when Ahab fell in battle – a reminder that God's word cannot be bound by human power.

After the prophet Micaiah son of Imlah announced that Ahab would fall at Ramoth in Gilead, the king ordered that Micaiah be brought back to Amon, the governor, and Zedekiah, 'the king's son.'
