Ananias belonged to the first Christian congregation in Jerusalem and is known from a dramatic event recorded in Acts. Together with his wife Sapphira, he sold a property, but the couple deliberately withheld part of the sale proceeds yet still presented their gift as if it represented the full amount. When the apostle Peter, through the insight of the Holy Spirit, exposed this deception, he emphasized that Ananias had not only lied to people but to God himself. Immediately after Peter’s confrontation, Ananias fell down dead. This event, in which Sapphira suffered the same fate shortly afterward, marks a decisive moment in the history of the young church. It clearly shows that God’s holiness demands sincerity and truthfulness within the community of believers, and it inspired deep reverence both among Christians and in their surroundings.

Sale of property and withholding of funds

Ananias and his wife Sapphira sold a piece of property, but agreed between themselves to keep back part of the proceeds for themselves while pretending to give the entire amount to the apostles.

1Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property.
2With his wife's knowledge he held back part of the price, and brought only a portion of it and laid it at the apostles' feet.

Peter's confrontation

The apostle Peter, led by the Holy Spirit, saw through the deception and confronted Ananias. Peter pointed out that Ananias had not lied to men but to God himself.

3But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart, that you should lie to the Holy Spirit and hold back part of the price of the land?
εἶπεν δὲ ⸀ὁ Πέτρος· Ἁνανία, διὰ τί ἐπλήρωσεν ὁ Σατανᾶς τὴν καρδίαν σου, ψεύσασθαί σε τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον καὶ ⸀νοσφίσασθαι ἀπὸ τῆς τιμῆς τοῦ χωρίου;
4While it remained unsold, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was the money not at your disposal? Why have you contrived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."

Ananias' sudden death

As soon as Ananias heard Peter's words, he fell down and died. Great fear seized all who heard about it, and young men came, wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him.

5When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and died. And great fear came over all who heard of it.
6The young men rose, wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him.

Sapphira's death

About three hours later Sapphira came in, not knowing what had happened to her husband. She repeated the same lie to Peter and also fell down dead.

7About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
8Peter said to her, "Tell me, was this the price you got for the land?" "Yes," she said, "that was the price."
9Then Peter said to her, "How could you agree together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Look, the feet of those who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out."
10At once she fell down at his feet and died. When the young men came in, they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

Reverence in the Church

After the death of Ananias and Sapphira, great fear came over the whole church and all who heard about it, underscoring the seriousness of living truthfully before God.

11And great fear came over the whole church and over all who heard of these things.
