Arpachshad was the son of Shem and grandson of Noah, born two years after the great flood when Shem was 100 years old. He is regarded as the first named person born in the world after the flood, thus representing a new beginning for humanity. According to the Hebrew base text, he became the father of Shelah at age 35 and lived to be 438 years old. Arpachshad is a central link in the genealogy from Noah through Shem to Abraham and onward to Jesus Christ. In the Septuagint and in Luke 3:36, an extra generation, Cainan, is placed between Arpachshad and Shelah—a difference that constitutes one of the best-known textual-critical questions related to biblical genealogies.

Arpachshad is mentioned in Luke's genealogy of Jesus, which traces Jesus' ancestry all the way back to Adam. Here, Cainan is also mentioned between Arpachshad and Shelah.
