Asbuk

Asbuk is known exclusively from the book of Nehemiah, where he is identified as the father of a man named Nehemiah – another person than the main character of the book, Nehemiah son of Hakalja. The son Nehemiah, son of Asbuk, served as governor over half of the district of Beth-Shur and participated in the major joint project to rebuild Jerusalem's wall after returning from the Babylonian exile. According to Neh 3:16, he was responsible for a section of the wall that extended to a point opposite the tombs of David, the raised pool, and the Fortress of Zion. Asbuk is attributed no actions of his own in the text, but the mention of his son in a prominent leadership role suggests that the family had local influence in the Judean highlands under Persian rule. Beth-Shur was a strategically important fortified city, and the family's connection to it underscores their position within the administrative structure of the province of Yehud.
