Assir

Son of Korah, a Levite from the family of Kohath

El éxodoLeviteAncestor of the Korahite clanc. 1400 BC

Assir was a Levite of the family of Kohath and a son of Korah. His father led a rebellion against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, and the rebels met God’s judgment when the earth opened up and fire consumed them. Yet Korah’s sons survived (Num 26:11), and Assir, together with his brothers Elkanah and Abiasaph, became an ancestor of the family of the Korahites. This family was given prominent duties connected to the sanctuary. In later generations their descendants served as singers and gatekeepers at the tabernacle and temple, under the service order established by King David. The spiritual legacy of Korah’s sons is especially visible through the psalms that bear their names—psalms marked by deep longing for God, praise, and trust in Him.

Mentioned in the genealogy of Korah

Assir is mentioned as a son of Korah in the Levite genealogy in Exodus.

24The sons of Korah: Assir, Elkanah, and Abiasaph. These were the clans of the Korahites.

Korah's rebellion against Moses

Assir's father Korah led a rebellion against Moses and Aaron, claiming that the entire congregation was holy. God judged the rebels, but Korah's sons did not perish.

1Now Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, took action, along with Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, descendants of Reuben.
2They rose up against Moses, together with two hundred and fifty men of Israel, leaders of the community, appointed members of the assembly, men of reputation.
3They gathered against Moses and Aaron and said to them, "You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them. Why then do you set yourselves above the LORD's assembly?"
31As soon as he finished speaking these words, the ground under them split open.
32The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, along with all Korah's men and all their possessions.
33They went down alive to the realm of the dead, with everything they owned. The earth closed over them, and they perished from among the assembly.
35And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who were offering the incense.
11The sons of Korah, however, did not die.

Korah's Sons Survive

Despite their father's sin and God's judgment on the rebels, Korah's sons survived. Their descendants continued to serve the Lord for generations to come.

10The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, when that company died and the fire consumed 250 men, and they became a warning sign.
11The sons of Korah, however, did not die.
