Hannah

Samuel's mother

Los juecesMatriarchc. 1130–1050 BC

Hannah was a devout woman who suffered from infertility while her husband's other wife mocked her. She prayed earnestly to God in the tabernacle and vowed that if she had a son, he would be dedicated to the Lord's service. God heard her prayer, and she gave birth to Samuel, who became one of Israel's greatest prophets.

Mocked by Peninnah

Hannah was childless while Elkanah's other wife, Peninnah, had children. Peninnah mocked her year after year.

2He had two wives; one was named Hannah, the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.
5But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, though the LORD had closed her womb.
6Her rival taunted her bitterly, provoking her because the LORD had closed her womb.
7So it went year after year: every time Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, Peninnah would provoke her, and Hannah would weep and refuse to eat.

The Earnest Prayer

Hannah wept and prayed in the tabernacle, vowing that if God gave her a son, he would be dedicated to the Lord forever.

10In deep anguish Hannah prayed to the LORD, weeping bitterly.
11And she made a vow: "LORD of hosts, if you will only look on the misery of your servant and remember me, if you will not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor shall ever touch his head."
12As she kept on praying before the LORD, Eli watched her mouth.
13Hannah was praying in her heart; her lips were moving, but no sound came out. So Eli thought she was drunk
15"No, my lord," Hannah answered. "I am a woman in deep distress. I have not been drinking wine or strong drink; I have been pouring out my soul before the LORD.
16Do not take your servant for a worthless woman; it is out of my great anguish and grief that I have been speaking all this time.

Eli's Blessing

The priest Eli first thought she was drunk, but when he understood her situation, he blessed her.

14and said to her, "How long will you go on drinking? Put your wine away."
17Then Eli answered, "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant what you have asked of him."
18She said, "May your servant find favor in your eyes." Then she went on her way, and she ate, and her face was no longer downcast.

Samuel's Birth and Dedication

Hannah gave birth to Samuel and brought him to the tabernacle when he was weaned, to serve the Lord under Eli.

20In the course of time Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, "I asked the LORD for him."
24When he was weaned, she took him up with her, along with three bulls, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh, though he was still a small child. [Footnote: Hebrew tradition reads "three bulls"; other ancient witnesses read "a three-year-old bull," which agrees with the single bull slaughtered in verse 25.]
27I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him.
28So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD." And there he worshiped the LORD.

Hannah's Song of Praise

Hannah sang a powerful song of praise that honored God for His faithfulness—a precursor to Mary's Magnificat.

1Then Hannah prayed: "My heart exults in the LORD; in the LORD my horn is lifted high. My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, for I rejoice in your salvation.
2No one is holy like the LORD; there is none besides you, and no rock like our God.
3Speak no more so proudly; let no arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by him every deed is weighed.
6The LORD brings death and gives life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up.
7The LORD makes poor and makes rich; he humbles and he exalts.
8He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, seating them among princes and giving them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD's, and on them he has set the world.
10Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered; he will thunder against them from heaven. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and lift high the horn of his anointed."
