King of Gezer
Horam was the king of Gezer who came to help the city of Lachish in battle against Joshua and the Israelites during the conquest of Canaan. He and his entire army were defeated by Joshua, and none survived. He is an example of the Canaanite kings who tried to resist Israel's entry into the promised land.

Horam's Defeat
Joshua defeated Horam and all his people so that none were left. This was part of the great southern campaign.
33Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish, but Joshua struck him down along with his people, until no survivor was left.
אָ֣ז עָלָ֗ה הֹרָם֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ גֶּ֔זֶר לַעְזֹ֖ר אֶת־לָכִ֑ישׁ וַיַּכֵּ֤הוּ יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ וְאֶת־עַמּ֔וֹ עַד־בִּלְתִּ֥י הִשְׁאִֽיר־ל֖וֹ שָׂרִֽיד׃
The Southern Coalition Defeated
Horam's attempt to help Lachish was part of a broader conflict in which several Canaanite kings in the south tried to resist Joshua's conquest, but all were defeated.
28That day Joshua captured Makkedah and put it and its king to the sword. He devoted the city and everyone in it to destruction, leaving no survivor, and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
וְאֶת־מַקֵּדָה֩ לָכַ֨ד יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא וַיַּכֶּ֣הָ לְפִי־חֶרֶב֮ וְאֶת־מַלְכָּהּ֒ הֶחֱרִ֣ם אוֹתָ֗ם וְאֶת־כָּל־הַנֶּ֙פֶשׁ֙ אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֔הּ לֹ֥א הִשְׁאִ֖יר שָׂרִ֑יד וַיַּ֙עַשׂ֙ לְמֶ֣לֶךְ מַקֵּדָ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָׂ֖ה לְמֶ֥לֶךְ יְרִיחֽוֹ׃
29Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked it.
וַיַּעֲבֹ֣ר יְ֠הוֹשֻׁעַ וְכָֽל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל עִמּ֛וֹ מִמַּקֵּדָ֖ה לִבְנָ֑ה וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם עִם־לִבְנָֽה׃
30The LORD gave that city and its king into Israel's hand as well. Joshua put it to the sword along with everyone in it, leaving no survivor there, and he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
וַיִּתֵּן֩ יְהוָ֨ה גַּם־אוֹתָ֜הּ בְּיַ֣ד יִשְׂרָאֵל֘ וְאֶת־מַלְכָּהּ֒ וַיַּכֶּ֣הָ לְפִי־חֶ֗רֶב וְאֶת־כָּל־הַנֶּ֙פֶשׁ֙ אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֔הּ לֹֽא־הִשְׁאִ֥יר בָּ֖הּ שָׂרִ֑יד וַיַּ֣עַשׂ לְמַלְכָּ֔הּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָׂ֖ה לְמֶ֥לֶךְ יְרִיחֽוֹ׃ ס
31Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish. He laid siege to it and attacked it.
וַיַּעֲבֹ֣ר יְ֠הוֹשֻׁעַ וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל עִמּ֛וֹ מִלִּבְנָ֖ה לָכִ֑ישָׁה וַיִּ֣חַן עָלֶ֔יהָ וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם בָּֽהּ׃

וַיַּעֲבֹ֣ר יְ֠הוֹשֻׁעַ וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל עִמּ֛וֹ מִלָּכִ֖ישׁ עֶגְלֹ֑נָה וַיַּחֲנ֣וּ עָלֶ֔יהָ וַיִּֽלָּחֲמ֖וּ עָלֶֽיהָ׃
35They captured it that very day and put it to the sword, devoting to destruction everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish.
וַֽיִּלְכְּד֜וּהָ בַּיּ֤וֹם הַהוּא֙ וַיַכּ֣וּהָ לְפִי־חֶ֔רֶב וְאֵת֙ כָּל־הַנֶּ֣פֶשׁ אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֔הּ בַּיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא הֶחֱרִ֑ים כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֖ה לְלָכִֽישׁ׃ פ
Joshua's Conquest of Lachish
Joshua besieged and captured Lachish in two days, which prompted Horam's attempt to come to the city's aid. The king of Lachish, Japhia, was killed.
31Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish. He laid siege to it and attacked it.
וַיַּעֲבֹ֣ר יְ֠הוֹשֻׁעַ וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל עִמּ֛וֹ מִלִּבְנָ֖ה לָכִ֑ישָׁה וַיִּ֣חַן עָלֶ֔יהָ וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם בָּֽהּ׃

Gezer Remains Unconquered
Although Horam was defeated, the city of Gezer itself was not completely conquered by the Israelites at this time. Gezer remained partially inhabited by Canaanites for a long time afterward.
10But they did not drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer. So the Canaanites have lived among the Ephraimites to this day, subjected to forced labor.
וְלֹ֣א הוֹרִ֔ישׁוּ אֶת־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י הַיּוֹשֵׁ֣ב בְּגָ֑זֶר וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֜י בְּקֶ֤רֶב אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ עַד־הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה וַיְהִ֖י לְמַס־עֹבֵֽד׃ פ
29Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, so the Canaanites went on living there among them.
וְאֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ לֹ֣א הוֹרִ֔ישׁ אֶת־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י הַיּוֹשֵׁ֣ב בְּגָ֑זֶר וַיֵּ֧שֶׁב הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֛י בְּקִרְבּ֖וֹ בְּגָֽזֶר׃ פ
