El regresoLeaderc. 450 BC

Jasaaï was an Israelite from the lineage of Bani who lived in the period after the Babylonian exile. He was among the men who had taken foreign wives and, at Ezra's command, agreed to divorce them to preserve the religious purity of the people. Ezra's reforms against mixed marriages

Ezra discovered that many Israelites, including priests and Levites, had married women from surrounding nations, which was contrary to God's law.

1When all this had been done, the officials came to me and said: "The people of Israel, along with the priests and the Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the peoples of the lands and their detestable practices—from the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites.
2They have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy seed has been mingled with the peoples of the lands. And the officials and leaders have led the way in this unfaithfulness."
3When I heard this, I tore my garment and my robe, pulled hair from my head and my beard, and sat down appalled.

The people's confession and pledge

The people gathered, confessed their sin of intermarriage, and pledged to separate from their foreign wives.

1While Ezra was praying and making this confession, weeping and lying prostrate before the house of God, a very large assembly of Israel gathered around him—men, women, and children—for the people were weeping bitterly.
2Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, one of the descendants of Elam, spoke up and said to Ezra: "We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples of the land. Yet even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this.
3So let us now make a covenant with our God to send away all these women along with their children, according to the counsel of the Lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God. Let it be done according to the Law.
4Rise up, for this matter rests on you, and we stand with you. Take courage and act."

Investigative commission established

A commission was appointed to investigate who had taken foreign wives, and all were instructed to appear within three days.

16So the returned exiles did as had been proposed. Ezra the priest selected men who were heads of families, each designated by name according to his father's house. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to examine the matter,
17and by the first day of the first month they had finished dealing with all the men who had married foreign women.
