También conocido como: Yoktan

Los patriarcasPatriarchc. 2300–2100 BC

Joktan was the son of Eber and brother to Peleg, and is regarded as the patriarch of thirteen Arab tribes. He belongs to the lineage of Shem, Noah's son, and his descendants settled in southern Arabia. While Peleg's line led onward to Abraham and the people of Israel, Joktan's line represents the Semitic peoples of the Arabian Peninsula.

Joktan's Place in Shem's Lineage

Joktan is mentioned as a son of Eber in the genealogy following Shem, Noah's son. This lineage shows how the nations spread after the flood.

25Two sons were born to Eber. One was named Peleg, because in his days the earth was divided; his brother's name was Joktan.

Joktan's Thirteen Sons

The Bible lists Joktan's thirteen sons, who became ancestors for various ethnic groups in southern Arabia. These include well-known names such as Sheba, Ophir, and Havilah.

26Joktan fathered Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,

Settlement Area of the Descendants

Joktan's descendants settled in the mountainous region to the east, from Mesha to Sephar. This area likely corresponds to southern Arabia and Yemen.

30Their settlements stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, the hill country of the east.

Division of the Nations in the Days of Peleg

In Eber's days the earth was divided – this likely refers to the confusion of languages at Babel or a geographical division. Joktan and Peleg represent two branches of Eber's family that went in different directions.

25Two sons were born to Eber. One was named Peleg, because in his days the earth was divided; his brother's name was Joktan.

Joktan in 1 Chronicles

Joktan's lineage is repeated in 1 Chronicles, confirming his significance in biblical history as the patriarch of many nations.

19Two sons were born to Eber: one was named Peleg, because in his days the earth was divided, and his brother's name was Joktan.

Joktan's place in Shem's extended lineage

In the detailed genealogy of Genesis 11, Eber is mentioned as the father of Peleg and Joktan, placing Joktan in the direct line from Shem to Abraham, even though Abraham's line goes through Peleg.

14When Shelah had lived thirty years, he became the father of Eber.
וְשֶׁ֥לַח חַ֖י שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־עֵֽבֶר׃ ‬
15After he became the father of Eber, Shelah lived four hundred and three years and had other sons and daughters.

16When Eber had lived thirty-four years, he became the father of Peleg.
