Esau's Marriage

Esau took Judith, the daughter of the Hittite Beeri, as his wife when he was forty years old.

34When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.

A Source of Grief for Isaac and Rebekah

Judith and Basemath, Esau's Hittite wives, were a bitter grief to Isaac and Rebekah because of their pagan background.

34When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.
35They were a bitter grief to Isaac and Rebekah.

Rebekah's Concern about Hittite Women

Rebekah expressed her frustration to Isaac over the Hittite women and feared that Jacob would also marry one of the daughters of Canaan.

46Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I am weary of my life because of the Hittite women. If Jacob takes a wife from the Hittite women, such as these, from the daughters of this land, what good is my life to me?"

Isaac Sends Jacob Away

Because of the experiences with Esau's Hittite wives, including Judith, Isaac sent Jacob to Paddan-Aram to find a wife from his own family.

1Isaac called Jacob, blessed him, and charged him: "Do not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.
2Get up and go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel, your mother's father, and take a wife from there, from the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.
3May God Almighty bless you, make you fruitful, and multiply you, so that you become a company of peoples.
4May he give you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your offspring with you, so that you may take possession of the land where you now live as a stranger, the land God gave to Abraham."
