The Wise King
King Lemuel is a figure mentioned in Proverbs chapter 31, known for the wise words his mother taught him. King Lemuel's mother gave him wise counsel on how a king should live, including warnings against women and wine.
1The words of Lemuel, king of Massa, which his mother taught him:
דִּ֭בְרֵי לְמוּאֵ֣ל מֶ֑לֶךְ מַ֝שָּׂ֗א אֲֽשֶׁר־יִסְּרַ֥תּוּ אִמּֽוֹ׃
2What shall I say, my son? What, son of my womb? What, son of my vows?
מַה־בְּ֭רִי וּמַֽה־בַּר־בִּטְנִ֑י וּ֝מֶה בַּר־נְדָרָֽי׃
3Do not give your strength to women, nor your ways to those who ruin kings.
אַל־תִּתֵּ֣ן לַנָּשִׁ֣ים חֵילֶ֑ךָ וּ֝דְרָכֶ֗יךָ לַֽמְח֥וֹת מְלָכִֽין׃
Warnings Against Wine and Strong Drink
Lemuel's mother warned him against drinking wine and strong drink, as this can lead kings to forget the laws and oppress the poor.
4It is not for kings, Lemuel—not for kings to drink wine, nor for rulers to crave strong drink,
אַ֤ל לַֽמְלָכִ֨ים ׀ לְֽמוֹאֵ֗ל אַ֣ל לַֽמְלָכִ֣ים שְׁתוֹ־יָ֑יִן וּ֝לְרוֹזְנִ֗ים *או **אֵ֣י שֵׁכָֽר׃
5lest they drink and forget the law, and pervert the justice due to all the afflicted.
פֶּן־יִ֭שְׁתֶּה וְיִשְׁכַּ֣ח מְחֻקָּ֑ק וִֽ֝ישַׁנֶּה דִּ֣ין כָּל־בְּנֵי־עֹֽנִי׃
6Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress.
תְּנוּ־שֵׁכָ֣ר לְאוֹבֵ֑ד וְ֝יַיִן לְמָ֣רֵי נָֽפֶשׁ׃
7Let them drink and forget their poverty, and remember their misery no more.
יִ֭שְׁתֶּה וְיִשְׁכַּ֣ח רִישׁ֑וֹ וַ֝עֲמָל֗וֹ לֹ֣א יִזְכָּר־עֽוֹד׃
Defense of the Weak and Justice
Lemuel was urged to speak up for those who cannot speak and defend the rights of all helpless people, as well as to judge fairly and uphold the cause of the poor and needy.
8Open your mouth for the one who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute.
פְּתַח־פִּ֥יךָ לְאִלֵּ֑ם אֶל־דִּ֝֗ין כָּל־בְּנֵ֥י חֲלֽוֹף׃
9Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the cause of the poor and needy.
פְּתַח־פִּ֥יךָ שְׁפָט־צֶ֑דֶק וְ֝דִ֗ין עָנִ֥י וְאֶבְיֽוֹן׃ פ
Hymn of the Capable Woman
Proverbs 31:10-31 contains the famous acrostic hymn about the capable woman, traditionally attributed to the teaching of Lemuel's mother.
10A wife of noble character—who can find her? She is worth far more than pearls.
אֵֽשֶׁת־חַ֭יִל מִ֣י יִמְצָ֑א וְרָחֹ֖ק מִפְּנִינִ֣ים מִכְרָֽהּ׃
11Her husband's heart trusts in her, and he lacks nothing of value.
בָּ֣טַח בָּ֭הּ לֵ֣ב בַּעְלָ֑הּ וְ֝שָׁלָ֗ל לֹ֣א יֶחְסָֽר׃
12She brings him good and not harm all the days of her life.
גְּמָלַ֣תְהוּ ט֣וֹב וְלֹא־רָ֑ע כֹּ֝֗ל יְמֵ֣י חַיֶּֽיה׃
13She seeks out wool and flax, and her hands work with delight.
דָּ֭רְשָׁה צֶ֣מֶר וּפִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַ֝תַּ֗עַשׂ בְּחֵ֣פֶץ כַּפֶּֽיהָ׃
14She is like a merchant's ships, bringing her food from far away.
הָ֭יְתָה כָּאֳנִיּ֣וֹת סוֹחֵ֑ר מִ֝מֶּרְחָ֗ק תָּבִ֥יא לַחְמָֽהּ׃
15She rises while it is still night, sets food before her household, and gives portions to her servant girls.
וַתָּ֤קָם ׀ בְּע֬וֹד לַ֗יְלָה וַתִּתֵּ֣ן טֶ֣רֶף לְבֵיתָ֑הּ וְ֝חֹ֗ק לְנַעֲרֹתֶֽיהָ׃
16She considers a field and buys it; from the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.
זָמְמָ֣ה שָׂ֭דֶה וַתִּקָּחֵ֑הוּ מִפְּרִ֥י כַ֝פֶּ֗יהָ *נטע **נָ֣טְעָה כָּֽרֶם׃
17She girds herself with strength and makes her arms strong.
חָֽגְרָ֣ה בְע֣וֹז מָתְנֶ֑יהָ וַ֝תְּאַמֵּ֗ץ זְרֹעוֹתֶֽיהָ׃
18She sees that her trading is profitable; her lamp does not go out at night.
טָ֭עֲמָה כִּי־ט֣וֹב סַחְרָ֑הּ לֹֽא־יִכְבֶּ֖ה *בליל **בַלַּ֣יְלָה נֵרָֽהּ׃
19She reaches out her hands to the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
יָ֭דֶיהָ שִׁלְּחָ֣ה בַכִּישׁ֑וֹר וְ֝כַפֶּ֗יהָ תָּ֣מְכוּ פָֽלֶךְ׃
20She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out to the needy.
כַּ֭פָּהּ פָּרְשָׂ֣ה לֶעָנִ֑י וְ֝יָדֶ֗יהָ שִׁלְּחָ֥ה לָֽאֶבְיֽוֹן׃
21She has no fear of snow for her household, for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
לֹא־תִירָ֣א לְבֵיתָ֣הּ מִשָּׁ֑לֶג כִּ֥י כָל־בֵּ֝יתָ֗הּ לָבֻ֥שׁ שָׁנִֽים׃
22She makes coverings for her bed; her clothing is fine linen and purple.
מַרְבַדִּ֥ים עָֽשְׂתָה־לָּ֑הּ שֵׁ֖שׁ וְאַרְגָּמָ֣ן לְבוּשָֽׁהּ׃
23Her husband is known in the gates, where he sits among the elders of the land.
נוֹדָ֣ע בַּשְּׁעָרִ֣ים בַּעְלָ֑הּ בְּ֝שִׁבְתּ֗וֹ עִם־זִקְנֵי־אָֽרֶץ׃
24She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.
סָדִ֣ין עָ֭שְׂתָה וַתִּמְכֹּ֑ר וַ֝חֲג֗וֹר נָתְנָ֥ה לַֽכְּנַעֲנִֽי׃
25Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the days to come.
עֹז־וְהָדָ֥ר לְבוּשָׁ֑הּ וַ֝תִּשְׂחַ֗ק לְי֣וֹם אַחֲרֽוֹן׃
26She opens her mouth with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
פִּ֭יהָ פָּתְחָ֣ה בְחָכְמָ֑ה וְתֽוֹרַת־חֶ֝֗סֶד עַל־לְשׁוֹנָֽהּ׃
27She watches over the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
צ֭וֹפִיָּה הֲלִיכ֣וֹת בֵּיתָ֑הּ וְלֶ֥חֶם עַ֝צְל֗וּת לֹ֣א תֹאכֵֽל׃
28Her children rise and call her blessed; her husband praises her as well:
קָ֣מוּ בָ֭נֶיהָ וַֽיְאַשְּׁר֑וּהָ בַּ֝עְלָ֗הּ וַֽיְהַֽלְלָהּ׃
29"Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all."
רַבּ֣וֹת בָּ֭נוֹת עָ֣שׂוּ חָ֑יִל וְ֝אַ֗תְּ עָלִ֥ית עַל־כֻּלָּֽנָה׃
30Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
שֶׁ֣קֶר הַ֭חֵן וְהֶ֣בֶל הַיֹּ֑פִי אִשָּׁ֥ה יִרְאַת־יְ֝הוָ֗ה הִ֣יא תִתְהַלָּֽל׃
31Give her the reward of her labor, and let her works praise her in the gates.
תְּנוּ־לָ֭הּ מִפְּרִ֣י יָדֶ֑יהָ וִֽיהַלְל֖וּהָ בַשְּׁעָרִ֣ים מַעֲשֶֽׂיהָ׃
