Maadai

Israelite who sent away his foreign wife

El regresoLeaderc. 500 BC

Maadai was one of the descendants of Bani who lived in the period after the Babylonian exile. He is mentioned in the book of Ezra as one of the Israelites who had taken foreign (non-Jewish) wives and agreed to send them away as part of Ezra's religious reforms to preserve the purity of the people.

Mentioned among the descendants of Bani

Maadai is listed among the descendants of Bani who had taken foreign wives in violation of God's law.

34From the sons of Bani: Maadai, Amram, Uel,

Acknowledgment of sin

Maadai was among those who acknowledged that taking foreign wives was a transgression against the Lord, and he committed to correcting the error.

10Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have been unfaithful. You have married foreign women and so added to the guilt of Israel.
11Now then, make confession to the LORD, the God of your fathers, and do his will: separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from your foreign wives."

Promise to send away the foreign wives

As part of the collective covenant led by Ezra, Maadai and the others promised to send away their foreign wives and their children.

19They pledged themselves to send away their wives, and being guilty, they presented a ram from the flock as their guilt offering.

Ezra's reforms and the assembly

Ezra gathered all the people in Jerusalem to address the issue of mixed marriages, and Maadai was among those who responded to the call.

7A proclamation was then issued throughout Judah and Jerusalem, calling all the returned exiles to assemble in Jerusalem.
8Anyone who failed to appear within three days would, by decision of the leaders and the elders, forfeit all his property and be excluded from the assembly of the exiles.
9So all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered in Jerusalem within the three days. It was the twentieth day of the ninth month. All the people sat in the open square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the heavy rain.

List of the Guilty

Maadai is recorded by name in the official list of men who had taken foreign wives, as a testimony that he too participated in this sin and the subsequent repentance.
