18 And if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge it to me. gr εἰ δέ τι ἠδίκησέν σε ἢ ὀφείλει, τοῦτο ἐμοὶ ⸀ἐλλόγα·
During his flight, Onesimus met the apostle Paul, who was imprisoned, and converted to Christianity through his preaching.
10 appeal to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I became while in chains. gr παρακαλῶ σε περὶ τοῦ ἐμοῦ τέκνου, ὃν ἐγέννησα ἐν τοῖς ⸀δεσμοῖς Ὀνήσιμον,
Paul refers to Onesimus as his child, whom he has begotten in prison, and developed a close spiritual relationship with him.
10 appeal to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I became while in chains. gr παρακαλῶ σε περὶ τοῦ ἐμοῦ τέκνου, ὃν ἐγέννησα ἐν τοῖς ⸀δεσμοῖς Ὀνήσιμον,
11 Once he was useless to you, but now he is useful both to you and to me.*
*The name Onesimus means "useful" or "profitable"; Paul is playing on his name here. gr τόν ποτέ σοι ἄχρηστον νυνὶ ⸀δὲ σοὶ καὶ ἐμοὶ εὔχρηστον,
12 I am sending him back to you—and with him my very heart. gr ὃν ἀνέπεμψά ⸂σοι αὐτόν, τοῦτʼ ἔστιν τὰ ἐμὰ σπλάγχνα⸃·
Paul sent Onesimus back to Philemon with a personal letter urging him to receive him as a brother, not as a slave.
12 I am sending him back to you—and with him my very heart. gr ὃν ἀνέπεμψά ⸂σοι αὐτόν, τοῦτʼ ἔστιν τὰ ἐμὰ σπλάγχνα⸃·
13 I would have liked to keep him with me, so that he might serve me in your place while I am in chains for the gospel. gr ὃν ἐγὼ ἐβουλόμην πρὸς ἐμαυτὸν κατέχειν, ἵνα ὑπὲρ σοῦ ⸂μοι διακονῇ⸃ ἐν τοῖς δεσμοῖς τοῦ εὐαγγελίου,
14 But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that your kindness would not be forced but voluntary. gr χωρὶς δὲ τῆς σῆς γνώμης οὐδὲν ἠθέλησα ποιῆσαι, ἵνα μὴ ὡς κατὰ ἀνάγκην τὸ ἀγαθόν σου ᾖ ἀλλὰ κατὰ ἑκούσιον·

Onesimus traveled with Tychicus to deliver letters to the church in Colossae and to Philemon personally.
7 Tychicus will tell you all about my situation. He is a beloved brother, a faithful servant and fellow slave in the Lord. gr Τὰ κατʼ ἐμὲ πάντα γνωρίσει ὑμῖν Τυχικὸς ὁ ἀγαπητὸς ἀδελφὸς καὶ πιστὸς διάκονος καὶ σύνδουλος ἐν κυρίῳ,
8 I am sending him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts. gr ὃν ἔπεμψα πρὸς ὑμᾶς εἰς αὐτὸ τοῦτο ἵνα ⸀γνῶτε τὰ περὶ ⸀ἡμῶν καὶ παρακαλέσῃ τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν,
9 With him comes Onesimus, our faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you everything that is happening here. gr σὺν Ὀνησίμῳ τῷ πιστῷ καὶ ἀγαπητῷ ἀδελφῷ, ὅς ἐστιν ἐξ ὑμῶν· πάντα ὑμῖν γνωρίσουσιν τὰ ὧδε.
