Orpah

The Moabite Daughter-in-Law Who Returned

Los juecesc. 1100 BC

Orpah was a Moabite woman who married Chilion, one of Naomi's sons. After her husband's death, unlike her sister-in-law Ruth, she chose to return to her people and her gods in Moab, which is often contrasted with Ruth's loyalty.

Marriage to Chilion

Orpah married Chilion, the son of Elimelech and Naomi from Bethlehem, while the family was living in Moab during a famine.

4The sons married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. They lived there about ten years,

Death of Her Husband

After about ten years in Moab, both Chilion and his brother Mahlon died, leaving Orpah, Ruth, and Naomi as widows.

5and then both Mahlon and Chilion died as well, so the woman was left without her two children and without her husband.

Accompanies Naomi on the Journey

When Naomi decided to return to Judah, both Orpah and Ruth accompanied her on the way.

7So she left the place where she had been living, and her two daughters-in-law with her, and they set out on the road back to the land of Judah.
8But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go back, each of you, to your mother's house. May the LORD show you kindness, as you have shown to the dead and to me.
9May the LORD grant that each of you find rest in the home of a husband." Then she kissed them, and they wept aloud.
10They said to her, "No, we will go back with you to your people."

Farewell with Naomi

After Naomi urged her daughters-in-law to return to their families, Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye and returned to Moab, to her people and her gods.

14At this they wept aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her.
15"Look," said Naomi, "your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her."
