Zeresh (Haman's wife)

Haman's advisor

El regresoWise manc. 480 BC

Zeresh was the wife of Haman, the powerful official under King Ahasuerus of Persia. She advised her husband on how to take revenge against Mordecai but also prophetically warned him of his impending downfall when she learned that Mordecai was a Jew.

Advice about the gallows

When Haman came home full of rage over Mordecai, who refused to bow down, Zeresh and his friends suggested that he build a gallows fifty cubits high and ask the king to hang Mordecai on it.

14His wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, "Have a pole set up, fifty cubits high, and in the morning ask the king to have Mordecai hanged on it. Then go with the king to the banquet in good spirits." The advice pleased Haman, and he had the pole set up.

Prophetic warning

After Haman was forced to honor Mordecai publicly, Zeresh and his advisors warned him that if Mordecai was of Jewish descent, Haman would not prevail against him but would surely fall.

13Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Then his advisers and his wife Zeresh said to him, "If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish descent, you cannot prevail against him; you will surely fall before him."

Witness to Haman's humiliation

Zeresh was among those who heard Haman's account of how he had to lead Mordecai through the city on the king's horse and proclaim his honor.

12Then Mordecai returned to the king's gate, but Haman rushed home, mourning, with his head covered.
