Tabitha is introduced as a disciple in Joppa who was full of good deeds and acts of mercy. She was known for her care for the poor and needy in the church.

36In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha, which translated means Dorcas. She was always doing good works and giving to those in need.

The Death and Preparation of Tabitha

Tabitha became ill and died. Her body was washed and laid in an upper room, in accordance with Jewish custom.

37About that time she fell sick and died. They washed her body and laid her in an upstairs room.

The Disciples Send for Peter

Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples sent two men to Peter with an urgent plea that he come to them without delay.

38Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples heard that Peter was there and sent two men to him with the plea, "Please come to us at once!"

The Widows Show Tabitha's Deeds

When Peter arrived, he was taken up to the room where Tabitha lay. All the widows stood weeping around him, showing him the tunics and robes that Tabitha had made for her while she was still alive.

39So Peter got up and went with them. When he arrived, they took him to the upstairs room, and all the widows stood around him weeping and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them.

Peter Raises Tabitha from the Dead

Peter asked everyone to leave, knelt down and prayed, then turned to the dead body and said: "Tabitha, get up!" She opened her eyes, saw Peter, and sat up. He reached out his hand and helped her up.

40Peter sent them all out of the room, knelt down, and prayed. Then he turned to the body and said, "Tabitha, get up." She opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up.
41He gave her his hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called the saints and the widows and presented her to them alive.

Many came to believe because of the miracle

The news about Tabitha's resurrection spread throughout Joppa, and many came to believe in the Lord as a result of this powerful miracle.

42This became known all over Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.
