Tola was the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, from the tribe of Issachar. His lineage connected him to one of Israel’s twelve tribes.

Tola judged Israel for 23 years, a period believed to have been marked by peace and stability following Abimelech's turbulent time.
2 He judged Israel twenty-three years, and then he died and was buried in Shamir. heb וַיִּשְׁפֹּט֙ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עֶשְׂרִ֥ים וְשָׁלֹ֖שׁ שָׁנָ֑ה וַיָּ֖מָת וַיִּקָּבֵ֥ר בְּשָׁמִֽיר׃ פ
When Tola died, he was buried in Shamir, the city where he had lived and served as judge.
2 He judged Israel twenty-three years, and then he died and was buried in Shamir. heb וַיִּשְׁפֹּט֙ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עֶשְׂרִ֥ים וְשָׁלֹ֖שׁ שָׁנָ֑ה וַיָּ֖מָת וַיִּקָּבֵ֥ר בְּשָׁמִֽיר׃ פ
