Christmas Eve

Joulu

The celebration of Jesus' birth in Bethlehem.

Bibelsk grunnlag

Luke's birth narrative: Augustus' census leads Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem, where Jesus is born and laid in a manger because there was no room in the inn (Luke 2:1-7). The shepherds in the field receive the message from the angel: 'Today a Savior has been born for you' (Luke 2:8-20). The heavenly host sings, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace.' Isaiah 9:2-7 about the child who is born and the people walking in darkness but seeing a great light.

Betydning

God enters into the very smallest — a child in a manger, at the edge of the empire. The message comes first to the shepherds, the lowest in society. The incarnation is not just a theological idea, but a concrete historical event: God takes up residence within humanity to redeem it from within.

GT-forbindelser

Isaiah 9:2-7 about the child and the Prince of Peace. Micah 5:2 about Bethlehem as the birthplace. Genesis 3:15 — the first promise of one who will crush the serpent's head (the protoevangelium). Isaiah 7:14 about Immanuel. Numbers 24:17 about the star rising from Jacob.

Liturgisk kontekst

The liturgical color is white (feast). In Norwegian tradition, Christmas Eve is the most important celebration of Christmas with a church service, the Christmas gospel from Luke, and Christmas carols. The Advent candles have burned out — now the Light itself has come. Christmastide lasts until Epiphany.

Historie

The celebration of Jesus' birth on December 25 is known from the 4th century in Rome. The date may have been chosen in connection with the Roman winter solstice festival (Sol Invictus). In the Eastern Church, January 6 was celebrated. The Norwegian tradition of Christmas Eve on December 24 follows Germanic custom where the holy day begins the evening before.
