Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. He is transfigured: his face shines like the sun, and his clothes become white as light (Matt 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-10, Luke 9:28-36). Moses and Elijah appear and speak with him about his "departure" in Jerusalem. Peter wants to build three shelters. A bright cloud overshadows them, and a voice says: "This is my Son, the beloved, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him!" On the way down, Jesus forbids them to tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man has risen.

Betydning

The Transfiguration reveals who Jesus truly is — God's glory breaks through his human form. Moses (the Law) and Elijah (the Prophets) testify about him and speak of his "departure" (exodus) in Jerusalem — his death on the cross as a new exodus from slavery. The event is a foretaste of the glory of the resurrection, given to the disciples as strength before the path of suffering.

Historie

The Transfiguration has been celebrated in the Eastern Church since the 5th century (August 6). In the Western Church, it was officially instituted in 1457 by Pope Callixtus III. The Lutheran tradition places it as the conclusion of Epiphanytide, as a final turning point before Lent.
