Easter Sunday

Pääsiäinen

The day of resurrection — the center of the Christian faith and the high point of the church year.

Bibelsk grunnlag

All four gospels tell of the empty tomb. Early Sunday morning women come to the tomb with anointing oil, but find the stone rolled away. An angel proclaims: "He is not here; he has risen!" In Matthew they meet the risen Jesus on their way back (Matt 28:1-10). In Mark the women flee in fear and amazement (Mark 16:1-8). In Luke they remember Jesus' words that he had to suffer and rise (Luke 24:1-12). In John Mary Magdalene comes alone, finds the tomb empty, and meets Jesus whom she first thinks is the gardener — until he says her name (John 20:1-18). Paul sums it up: "If Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless" (1 Cor 15:14).

Betydning

The resurrection is the confirmation that Jesus' sacrifice was accepted by God. Death has been defeated—not as an abstract idea, but as a historical event with witnesses. Jesus is vindicated as the Son of God (Rom 1:4). Believers share in the resurrection: "For as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ" (1 Cor 15:22). Baptism is participation in Jesus' death and resurrection (Rom 6:3-4). Without Easter Sunday, the entire Christian faith collapses—the cross alone would be a defeat, but the empty tomb makes it a victory.

GT-forbindelser

Jonah's three days and three nights in the belly of the fish is the foremost Old Testament type of the resurrection, which Jesus himself pointed to (Matt 12:40). Isaac's "sacrifice" on Mount Moriah, where Abraham receives his son back "as from the dead" (Gen 22, cf. Heb 11:19). The Exodus from Egypt—as Israel passed through the Red Sea from slavery to freedom, Christ passed through death into resurrection. Ezekiel's vision of the dry bones coming to life (Ezek 37). Hosea 6:2: "On the third day he will raise us up."

Liturgisk kontekst

White color. The absolute high point of the church year, more important than Christmas. The service is marked by joy, white garments, light, and flowers. The Easter greeting "Christ is risen! — Yes, he is truly risen!" is used in many traditions. The Easter season lasts fifty days until Pentecost. The earliest Christians celebrated the resurrection every Sunday—Sunday is "the little Easter." The date of Easter is determined by the first full moon after the vernal equinox.

Historie

Easter has been celebrated since the very earliest church. The first Christians, who were Jewish, celebrated the resurrection in connection with Passover. The Quartodeciman controversy in the 2nd century concerned whether Easter should be observed on 14 Nisan (alongside the Jewish Passover) or always on a Sunday. The Council of Nicaea (325) established the Sunday rule. The Western and Eastern churches use different calendar calculations, so Orthodox and Western Easter often fall on different dates.
