Sunday before Pentecost
The waiting for the Holy Spirit between Ascension and Pentecost.

The disciples gather in prayer in Jerusalem and wait for the promise (Acts 1:12-14). Jesus had said: "I will not leave you as orphans. I am coming to you" (John 14:18). "The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things" (John 14:26). "It is for your good that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you" (John 16:7).
Betydning
The waiting is not passive — the disciples are gathered in prayer and fellowship. Jesus explains that his physical absence is necessary so that the Spirit's universal presence may become possible. The Spirit is not a replacement for Jesus, but his presence in a new form — "another Advocate," who will "lead you into all truth."

Historie
The ten days between Ascension and Pentecost were from early church times a special time of prayer. The Pentecost novena (nine days of prayer) has its roots in the disciples' waiting in the upper room. The word "novena" (nine days) comes directly from this.
