Trinity Sunday

Kolminaisuuden aika

The celebration of the triune God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Bibelsk grunnlag

Nicodemus' nighttime conversation with Jesus: 'No one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again of water and the Spirit' (John 3:1-17). The Great Commission in the name of the Trinity: 'Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit' (Matt 28:19). Isaiah's temple vision with the seraphim's triple 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts' (Isa 6:1-8). Paul's blessing: 'The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit' (2 Cor 13:13).

Betydning

Trinity Sunday is the only day that celebrates a doctrine rather than an event. After celebrating God's works throughout the church year (the Father's creation, the Son's redemption, the Spirit's coming), all are gathered in the confession of one God in three persons. The doctrine of the Trinity is not abstract speculation but an expression of Christian experience: created by the Father, redeemed by the Son, made alive by the Spirit.

GT-forbindelser

Isaiah 6:3 — the triple 'holy' is interpreted in Christian tradition as an allusion to the three persons of the Trinity. Genesis 1:26: 'Let us make mankind in our image' — the plural form. The Spirit hovering over the waters (Gen 1:2) and God's word creating (Gen 1:3) — Spirit and Word active in creation.

Liturgisk kontekst

White color. First Sunday after Pentecost. The beginning of Trinitytide (the longest period in the church year, lasting until Advent). The Nicene Creed is often used on this Sunday. Athanasianum (the Athanasian Creed) was traditionally read on this day.

Historie

Trinity Sunday became a fixed part of the Western Church's calendar in 1334 under Pope John XXII, but had been celebrated locally since the 900s. The Eastern Church does not have a separate Trinity Sunday — they believe that every Sunday celebrates the mystery of the Trinity. Luther valued the day but warned against turning the doctrine of the Trinity into abstract philosophy.
