David's Last Words

David speaks his last words as a prophetic declaration. He calls himself the anointed one of Jacob's God and the sweet singer of Israel, stating that the Lord's Spirit has spoken through him. He describes the righteous ruler who reigns in the fear of God, like the morning light after rain, and points to the eternal covenant God made with his house. Finally, this is contrasted with the godless, who are like thorns that are thrown away and burned up.

2. Samuelin kirja 23,1-7

1These are the last words of David: The oracle of David son of Jesse, the oracle of the man raised on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the sweet singer of Israel:
2The Spirit of the LORD has spoken through me; his word was on my tongue.
3The God of Israel has spoken; the Rock of Israel said to me: One who rules over men in righteousness, who rules in the fear of God,
4is like the light of morning at sunrise, a cloudless dawn, like the gleam after rain that brings grass from the earth.
5Is not my house so with God? For he has made an everlasting covenant with me, ordered in every detail and secure. Will he not bring to flower all my salvation and every desire?
6But the worthless are all like thorns swept aside; they cannot be gathered by hand.
7Anyone who touches them must arm himself with iron or the shaft of a spear; they are burned up completely on the spot.
