Judgment on Damascus
The Lord proclaims judgment against Damascus. Hamath and Arpad are seized with fear at the bad news; Damascus is paralyzed and struck with anguish like a woman in labor. The city's young men and warriors will fall, and the Lord will set fire to its walls that will consume Ben-Hadad's palaces. Jeremiah 49:23-27
Jeremia 49,23-27
23Concerning Damascus: Hamath and Arpad are put to shame, for they have heard bad news. They melt away in fear; there is anguish like a restless sea that cannot be calmed.
לְדַמֶּ֗שֶׂק בּ֤וֹשָֽׁה חֲמָת֙ וְאַרְפָּ֔ד כִּי־שְׁמֻעָ֥ה רָעָ֛ה שָׁמְע֖וּ נָמֹ֑גוּ בַּיָּ֣ם דְּאָגָ֔ה הַשְׁקֵ֖ט לֹ֥א יוּכָֽל׃
24Damascus has grown weak; she has turned to flee, and panic has seized her. Anguish and pain have gripped her like a woman in labor.
רָפְתָ֥ה דַמֶּ֛שֶׂק הִפְנְתָ֥ה לָנ֖וּס וְרֶ֣טֶט ׀ הֶחֱזִ֑יקָה צָרָ֧ה וַחֲבָלִ֛ים אֲחָזַ֖תָּה כַּיּוֹלֵדָֽה׃
25How can the city of praise be forsaken, the town that was my joy?
אֵ֥יךְ לֹֽא־עֻזְּבָ֖ה עִ֣יר *תהלה **תְּהִלָּ֑ת קִרְיַ֖ת מְשׂוֹשִֽׂי׃
26Therefore her young men will fall in her streets, and all her soldiers will be silenced on that day, declares the LORD of hosts.
לָכֵ֛ן יִפְּל֥וּ בַחוּרֶ֖יהָ בִּרְחֹבֹתֶ֑יהָ וְכָל־אַנְשֵׁ֨י הַמִּלְחָמָ֤ה יִדַּ֙מּוּ֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא נְאֻ֖ם יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃
27I will set fire to the walls of Damascus, and the flames will consume the fortresses of Ben-hadad.
וְהִצַּ֥תִּי אֵ֖שׁ בְּחוֹמַ֣ת דַּמָּ֑שֶׂק וְאָכְלָ֖ה אַרְמְנ֥וֹת בֶּן־הֲדָֽד׃ ס
