The Day of Judgment and the New Heavens
Peter warns about scoffers who doubt God's promise of Jesus' return, explaining that the Lord is patient because He wants everyone to come to repentance. He describes how the heavens and earth will be dissolved by fire on the Lord's day, and urges believers to live holy lives in godliness while waiting for the new heavens and the new earth where righteousness dwells.
2. Pietarin kirje 3,3-13
3First of all, understand this: in the last days scoffers will come, mocking and following their own desires.
4They will say, "Where is this promised coming of his? Ever since our ancestors fell asleep, everything goes on just as it has since the beginning of creation."
5They deliberately ignore this: that long ago the heavens existed, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by God's word,
6and that through these the world of that time was deluged with water and destroyed.
7By that same word the present heavens and earth are being kept in store for fire, reserved for the day of judgment and the destruction of the ungodly.
8But do not overlook this one thing, dear friends: with the Lord a single day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like a single day.
9The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some count slowness; rather, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but for all to come to repentance.
10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. Then the heavens will vanish with a roar, the elements will be dissolved in flames, and the earth and everything done on it will be laid bare.
11Since everything is to be dissolved in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You should live holy and godly lives,
12as you look forward to the coming of the day of God and hasten it on — the day when the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt in the heat.
13But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
