The Healing of the Moonstruck Boy
A father comes to Jesus and asks for help with his moonstruck son, whom the disciples could not heal. Jesus rebukes the unbelieving generation, drives the demon out of the boy, and explains to the disciples that such demons can only be driven out by faith, prayer, and fasting.

14When they came to the crowd, a man approached him, knelt before him,
Καὶ ⸀ἐλθόντων πρὸς τὸν ὄχλον προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ ἄνθρωπος γονυπετῶν αὐτὸν
15and said, "Lord, have mercy on my son. He has seizures and suffers terribly; he often falls into the fire and often into the water.
καὶ λέγων· Κύριε, ἐλέησόν μου τὸν υἱόν, ὅτι σεληνιάζεται καὶ κακῶς ⸀πάσχει, πολλάκις γὰρ πίπτει εἰς τὸ πῦρ καὶ πολλάκις εἰς τὸ ὕδωρ.
16I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him."
καὶ προσήνεγκα αὐτὸν τοῖς μαθηταῖς σου, καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνήθησαν αὐτὸν θεραπεῦσαι.
17Jesus answered, "You unbelieving and perverse generation! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to me."
ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Ὦ γενεὰ ἄπιστος καὶ διεστραμμένη, ἕως πότε ⸂μεθʼ ὑμῶν ἔσομαι⸃; ἕως πότε ἀνέξομαι ὑμῶν; φέρετέ μοι αὐτὸν ὧδε.
18Then Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed from that moment.
καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ τὸ δαιμόνιον· καὶ ἐθεραπεύθη ὁ παῖς ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης.
19Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"
Τότε προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ τῷ Ἰησοῦ κατʼ ἰδίαν εἶπον· Διὰ τί ἡμεῖς οὐκ ἠδυνήθημεν ἐκβαλεῖν αὐτό;
20He told them, "Because your faith is so small. Truly I tell you, if you have faith like a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; nothing will be impossible for you."
ὁ δὲ ⸀λέγει αὐτοῖς· Διὰ τὴν ⸀ὀλιγοπιστίαν ὑμῶν· ἀμὴν γὰρ λέγω ὑμῖν, ἐὰν ἔχητε πίστιν ὡς κόκκον σινάπεως, ἐρεῖτε τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ· ⸂Μετάβα ἔνθεν⸃ ἐκεῖ, καὶ μεταβήσεται, καὶ οὐδὲν ἀδυνατήσει ⸀ὑμῖν.
21"But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."
Τοῦτο δὲ τὸ γένος οὐκ ἐκπορεύεται εἰ μὴ ἐν προσευχῇ καὶ νηστείᾳ.
