Jeremiah's Prayer for Vengeance Against His Enemies
The people plot against Jeremiah and seek to harm him with their words. Jeremiah asks the Lord to hear him, reminding God how he has spoken well on their behalf and turned away God's anger. He prays that famine, sword, and plague may strike their families as retribution, and that God will not forgive their guilt but act against them on the day of wrath.
Jeremia 18,18-23
18Then they said, "Come, let us make plans against Jeremiah, for instruction will never be lost from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor a word from the prophet. Come, let us strike him down with the tongue and pay no attention to anything he says."
19Give heed to me, LORD; listen to what my accusers are saying!
20Should evil be the payment for good? Yet they have dug a pit for my life. Remember how I stood before you and spoke on their behalf, to turn your wrath away from them.
21So hand their children over to famine; deliver them to the power of the sword. Let their wives be left childless and widowed; let their men be struck down by death, their young men cut down by the sword in battle.
22Let a cry be heard from their houses when you suddenly bring raiders against them—for they have dug a pit to catch me and hidden snares for my feet.
23But you, LORD, know all their plots to kill me. Do not cover over their guilt or blot out their sin from your sight. Let them be overthrown before you; deal with them in the time of your anger.
