Jesus' burial
Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for Jesus' body and, together with Nicodemus, laid it in a new tomb cut out of the rock. A large stone was rolled in front of the entrance, and the chief priests had Pilate secure the tomb with guards and a seal.

57When evening came, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus, arrived.
Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης ἦλθεν ἄνθρωπος πλούσιος ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας, τοὔνομα Ἰωσήφ, ὃς καὶ αὐτὸς ⸀ἐμαθητεύθη τῷ Ἰησοῦ·
58He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.
οὗτος προσελθὼν τῷ Πιλάτῳ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ. τότε ὁ Πιλᾶτος ἐκέλευσεν ⸀ἀποδοθῆναι.
59Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
καὶ λαβὼν τὸ σῶμα ὁ Ἰωσὴφ ἐνετύλιξεν ⸀αὐτὸ σινδόνι καθαρᾷ,
60and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a great stone across the entrance of the tomb and went away.
καὶ ἔθηκεν αὐτὸ ἐν τῷ καινῷ αὐτοῦ μνημείῳ ὃ ἐλατόμησεν ἐν τῇ πέτρᾳ, καὶ προσκυλίσας λίθον μέγαν τῇ θύρᾳ τοῦ μνημείου ἀπῆλθεν.
61Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there, facing the tomb.
ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ ⸀Μαριὰμ ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ ἡ ἄλλη Μαρία καθήμεναι ἀπέναντι τοῦ τάφου.
62The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went together to Pilate.
Τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον, ἥτις ἐστὶν μετὰ τὴν παρασκευήν, συνήχθησαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πρὸς Πιλᾶτον
63"Sir," they said, "we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise.'
λέγοντες· Κύριε, ἐμνήσθημεν ὅτι ἐκεῖνος ὁ πλάνος εἶπεν ἔτι ζῶν· Μετὰ τρεῖς ἡμέρας ἐγείρομαι·
64So give the order that the tomb be made secure until the third day. Otherwise his disciples may come and steal him away and tell the people, 'He has been raised from the dead.' Then this last deception would be worse than the first."
κέλευσον οὖν ἀσφαλισθῆναι τὸν τάφον ἕως τῆς τρίτης ἡμέρας, μήποτε ἐλθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ ⸀αὐτοῦ κλέψωσιν αὐτὸν καὶ εἴπωσιν τῷ λαῷ· Ἠγέρθη ἀπὸ τῶν νεκρῶν, καὶ ἔσται ἡ ἐσχάτη πλάνη χείρων τῆς πρώτης.
65Pilate said to them, "Take a guard. Go, make it as secure as you know how."
⸀ἔφη αὐτοῖς ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Ἔχετε κουστωδίαν· ὑπάγετε ἀσφαλίσασθε ὡς οἴδατε.
66So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and posting the guard.
οἱ δὲ πορευθέντες ἠσφαλίσαντο τὸν τάφον σφραγίσαντες τὸν λίθον μετὰ τῆς κουστωδίας.

42It was already evening, and since it was the day of Preparation—that is, the day before the Sabbath—
Καὶ ἤδη ὀψίας γενομένης, ἐπεὶ ἦν παρασκευή, ὅ ἐστιν ⸀προσάββατον,
43Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
⸀ἐλθὼν Ἰωσὴφ ⸀ὁ ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας εὐσχήμων βουλευτής, ὃς καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν προσδεχόμενος τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ, τολμήσας εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς ⸀τὸν Πιλᾶτον καὶ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ.
44Pilate was surprised that he was already dead, so he summoned the centurion and asked him whether Jesus had died some time ago.
ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἐθαύμασεν εἰ ἤδη τέθνηκεν, καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τὸν κεντυρίωνα ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν εἰ ⸀πάλαι ἀπέθανεν·
45When he learned from the centurion that he had, he granted the body to Joseph.
καὶ γνοὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ κεντυρίωνος ἐδωρήσατο τὸ ⸀πτῶμα τῷ Ἰωσήφ.
46So Joseph bought a linen cloth, took him down, wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.
καὶ ἀγοράσας ⸀σινδόνα καθελὼν αὐτὸν ἐνείλησεν τῇ σινδόνι καὶ ⸀ἔθηκεν αὐτὸν ἐν ⸀μνημείῳ ὃ ἦν λελατομημένον ἐκ πέτρας, καὶ προσεκύλισεν λίθον ἐπὶ τὴν θύραν τοῦ μνημείου.
47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
ἡ δὲ Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία ⸂ἡ Ἰωσῆτος⸃ ἐθεώρουν ποῦ ⸀τέθειται.

50Now look, there was a man named Joseph, a member of the council, a good and righteous man,
Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ ὀνόματι Ἰωσὴφ βουλευτὴς ὑπάρχων, ⸀ἀνὴρ ἀγαθὸς καὶ δίκαιος—
51who had not consented to their decision or their action. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea, and he was waiting for the kingdom of God.
οὗτος οὐκ ἦν συγκατατεθειμένος τῇ βουλῇ καὶ τῇ πράξει αὐτῶν— ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας πόλεως τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ὃς ⸀προσεδέχετο τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ,
52This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
οὗτος προσελθὼν τῷ Πιλάτῳ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ,
53Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid it in a tomb cut in the rock, where no one had yet been laid.
καὶ ⸀καθελὼν ἐνετύλιξεν αὐτὸ σινδόνι, καὶ ἔθηκεν ⸀αὐτὸν ἐν μνήματι λαξευτῷ οὗ οὐκ ἦν ⸂οὐδεὶς οὔπω⸃ κείμενος.
54It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning to dawn.
καὶ ἡμέρα ἦν ⸂παρασκευῆς, καὶ⸃ σάββατον ἐπέφωσκεν.
55The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it.
κατακολουθήσασαι δὲ ⸀αἱ γυναῖκες, αἵτινες ἦσαν συνεληλυθυῖαι ⸂ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας αὐτῷ⸃, ἐθεάσαντο τὸ μνημεῖον καὶ ὡς ἐτέθη τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ,
56Then they went home and prepared spices and ointments. And on the Sabbath they rested, according to the commandment.
ὑποστρέψασαι δὲ ἡτοίμασαν ἀρώματα καὶ μύρα. Καὶ τὸ μὲν σάββατον ἡσύχασαν κατὰ τὴν ἐντολήν,
Johanneksen evankeliumi 19,38-42
38After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, though secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate for permission to take away the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, so he came and took the body away.
Μετὰ ⸀δὲ ταῦτα ἠρώτησεν τὸν Πιλᾶτον Ἰωσὴφ ⸀ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας, ὢν μαθητὴς τοῦ Ἰησοῦ κεκρυμμένος δὲ διὰ τὸν φόβον τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ· καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν ὁ Πιλᾶτος. ἦλθεν οὖν καὶ ἦρεν τὸ σῶμα ⸀αὐτοῦ.
39Nicodemus, who had first come to Jesus at night, came as well, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds.[^1]

ἦλθεν δὲ καὶ Νικόδημος, ὁ ἐλθὼν πρὸς ⸀αὐτὸν νυκτὸς τὸ πρῶτον, φέρων ⸀μίγμα σμύρνης καὶ ἀλόης ὡς λίτρας ἑκατόν.
40They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews.
ἔλαβον οὖν τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἔδησαν ⸀αὐτὸ ὀθονίοις μετὰ τῶν ἀρωμάτων, καθὼς ἔθος ἐστὶν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ἐνταφιάζειν.
41At the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid.
ἦν δὲ ἐν τῷ τόπῳ ὅπου ἐσταυρώθη κῆπος, καὶ ἐν τῷ κήπῳ μνημεῖον καινόν, ἐν ᾧ οὐδέπω οὐδεὶς ⸂ἦν τεθειμένος⸃·
42Because it was the Jewish day of preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
ἐκεῖ οὖν διὰ τὴν παρασκευὴν τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ὅτι ἐγγὺς ἦν τὸ μνημεῖον, ἔθηκαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν.
