Jonathan Strengthens David in the Forest
Jonathan, Saul's son, seeks out David in the forest area and strengthens his hand in God. He assures David that Saul will not find him and confirms that David will become king over Israel while Jonathan himself will be second in command. They make a covenant before the Lord, after which David remains in the forest while Jonathan returns home.
1. Samuelin kirja 23,16-18
16And Jonathan, Saul's son, set out and went to David at Horesh, and he strengthened his hand in God.
וַיָּ֙קָם֙ יְהוֹנָתָ֣ן בֶּן־שָׁא֔וּל וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ אֶל־דָּוִ֖ד חֹ֑רְשָׁה וַיְחַזֵּ֥ק אֶת־יָד֖וֹ בֵּאלֹהִֽים׃
17He said to him, "Do not be afraid. The hand of my father Saul will not find you. You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you. Even my father Saul knows this."
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו אַל־תִּירָ֗א כִּ֠י לֹ֤א תִֽמְצָאֲךָ֙ יַ֚ד שָׁא֣וּל אָבִ֔י וְאַתָּה֙ תִּמְלֹ֣ךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְאָנֹכִ֖י אֶֽהְיֶה־לְּךָ֣ לְמִשְׁנֶ֑ה וְגַם־שָׁא֥וּל אָבִ֖י יֹדֵ֥עַ כֵּֽן׃
18The two of them made a covenant before the LORD. Then David stayed at Horesh, and Jonathan went home.
וַיִּכְרְת֧וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֛ם בְּרִ֖ית לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב דָּוִד֙ בַּחֹ֔רְשָׁה וִיהוֹנָתָ֖ן הָלַ֥ךְ לְבֵיתֽוֹ׃ ס
