The Kenites Settle Down and Judah Continues the Conquests
The descendants of the Kenites, Moses' father-in-law's clan, set out from the City of Palms with Judah's sons and settle in the Negev of Judah near Arad. Judah and his brother Simeon defeat the Canaanites at Zephath, devote the city to destruction, and rename it Hormah. Judah takes Gaza, Ashkelon, and Ekron along with their surrounding territories. The Lord is with Judah, and they drive out the inhabitants of the hill country, but cannot dislodge those in the valley because they have iron chariots. Hebron is given to Caleb, as Moses had said, and he drives out the three sons of Anak.

16The descendants of Moses' father-in-law, the Kenite, went up with the people of Judah from the City of Palms to the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negev near Arad, and they went and settled among the people there.
וּבְנֵ֣י קֵינִי֩ חֹתֵ֨ן מֹשֶׁ֜ה עָל֨וּ מֵעִ֤יר הַתְּמָרִים֙ אֶת־בְּנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה מִדְבַּ֣ר יְהוּדָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּנֶ֣גֶב עֲרָ֑ד וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב אֶת־הָעָֽם׃
17Judah went with his brother Simeon, and together they defeated the Canaanites living in Zephath. They devoted the city to destruction, and so it was named Hormah.<note>Hormah sounds like the Hebrew word for "destruction."</note>
וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ יְהוּדָה֙ אֶת־שִׁמְע֣וֹן אָחִ֔יו וַיַּכּ֕וּ אֶת־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י יוֹשֵׁ֣ב צְפַ֑ת וַיַּחֲרִ֣ימוּ אוֹתָ֔הּ וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שֵׁם־הָעִ֖יר חָרְמָֽה׃
18Judah also took Gaza with its territory, Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory.
וַיִּלְכֹּ֤ד יְהוּדָה֙ אֶת־עַזָּ֣ה וְאֶת־גְּבוּלָ֔הּ וְאֶֽת־אַשְׁקְל֖וֹן וְאֶת־גְּבוּלָ֑הּ וְאֶת־עֶקְר֖וֹן וְאֶת־גְּבוּלָֽהּ׃
19The LORD was with Judah, and they took possession of the hill country, but they could not drive out the people of the plain, because they had iron chariots.
וַיְהִ֤י יְהוָה֙ אֶתּ־יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיֹּ֖רֶשׁ אֶת־הָהָ֑ר כִּ֣י לֹ֤א לְהוֹרִישׁ֙ אֶת־יֹשְׁבֵ֣י הָעֵ֔מֶק כִּי־רֶ֥כֶב בַּרְזֶ֖ל לָהֶֽם׃
20Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had promised, and he drove out from there the three sons of Anak.
וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ לְכָלֵב֙ אֶת־חֶבְר֔וֹן כּֽ͏ַאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֣ר מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיּ֣וֹרֶשׁ מִשָּׁ֔ם אֶת־שְׁלֹשָׁ֖ה בְּנֵ֥י הָעֲנָֽק׃
