Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law
Paul explains how Christ bought our freedom from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, so that Abraham's blessing could come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus. The law was added because of transgressions and served as a guardian until Christ, so that we might be justified by faith.
Galatalaiskirje 3,10-14
10For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse, since it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the book of the law."
Ὅσοι γὰρ ἐξ ἔργων νόμου εἰσὶν ὑπὸ κατάραν εἰσίν, γέγραπται γὰρ ⸀ὅτι Ἐπικατάρατος πᾶς ὃς οὐκ ⸀ἐμμένει πᾶσιν τοῖς γεγραμμένοις ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ τοῦ νόμου τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτά.
11Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because "the righteous will live by faith."
ὅτι δὲ ἐν νόμῳ οὐδεὶς δικαιοῦται παρὰ τῷ θεῷ δῆλον, ὅτι Ὁ δίκαιος ἐκ πίστεως ζήσεται,
12But the law is not based on faith; instead, "whoever does these things will live by them."
ὁ δὲ νόμος οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ πίστεως, ἀλλʼ· Ὁ ποιήσας ⸀αὐτὰ ζήσεται ἐν αὐτοῖς.
13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree."
Χριστὸς ἡμᾶς ἐξηγόρασεν ἐκ τῆς κατάρας τοῦ νόμου γενόμενος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν κατάρα, ⸂ὅτι γέγραπται⸃· Ἐπικατάρατος πᾶς ὁ κρεμάμενος ἐπὶ ξύλου,
14He did this so that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, and so that by faith we might receive the promised Spirit.
ἵνα εἰς τὰ ἔθνη ἡ εὐλογία τοῦ Ἀβραὰμ γένηται ἐν ⸂Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ⸃, ἵνα τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν τοῦ πνεύματος λάβωμεν διὰ τῆς πίστεως.
Galatalaiskirje 3,19-25
19Why, then, the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the coming of the seed to whom the promise was made. It was put into effect through angels by a mediator.
Τί οὖν ὁ νόμος; τῶν παραβάσεων χάριν προσετέθη, ἄχρις ⸀οὗ ἔλθῃ τὸ σπέρμα ᾧ ἐπήγγελται, διαταγεὶς διʼ ἀγγέλων ἐν χειρὶ μεσίτου·
20Now a mediator implies more than one party, but God is one.
ὁ δὲ μεσίτης ἑνὸς οὐκ ἔστιν, ὁ δὲ θεὸς εἷς ἐστιν.
21Is the law, then, opposed to the promises of God? By no means! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would indeed come by the law.
Ὁ οὖν νόμος κατὰ τῶν ἐπαγγελιῶν τοῦ θεοῦ; μὴ γένοιτο· εἰ γὰρ ἐδόθη νόμος ὁ δυνάμενος ζῳοποιῆσαι, ὄντως ⸂ἐκ νόμου ἂν⸃ ἦν ἡ δικαιοσύνη.
22But Scripture has locked up everything under sin, so that what was promised might be given, through faith in Jesus Christ, to those who believe.
ἀλλὰ συνέκλεισεν ἡ γραφὴ τὰ πάντα ὑπὸ ἁμαρτίαν ἵνα ἡ ἐπαγγελία ἐκ πίστεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δοθῇ τοῖς πιστεύουσιν.
23Before this faith came, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed.
Πρὸ τοῦ δὲ ἐλθεῖν τὴν πίστιν ὑπὸ νόμον ἐφρουρούμεθα ⸀συγκλειόμενοι εἰς τὴν μέλλουσαν πίστιν ἀποκαλυφθῆναι.
24So the law was our guardian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith.
ὥστε ὁ νόμος παιδαγωγὸς ἡμῶν γέγονεν εἰς Χριστόν, ἵνα ἐκ πίστεως δικαιωθῶμεν·
25Now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.
ἐλθούσης δὲ τῆς πίστεως οὐκέτι ὑπὸ παιδαγωγόν ἐσμεν.
