The Parable of the Great Banquet
Jesus tells the parable about a man who holds a great banquet and invites many. When the meal is ready, those invited refuse with various excuses: one has bought a field, another five yoke of oxen, and a third has just gotten married. The master becomes angry and sends his servant out to bring in the poor, crippled, blind, and lame from the streets and alleys of the city, and then out to the roads and along the fences, so that the house will be full. None of those originally invited will get to taste his feast.
Luukkaan evankeliumi 14,15-24
15When one of those at the table heard this, he said to him, "Blessed is the one who will eat bread in the kingdom of God."
16Jesus replied, "A man was giving a great banquet, and he invited many guests.
17At the hour of the dinner he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, 'Come, everything is ready now.'
18But one after another they all began to make excuses. The first said, 'I have bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.'
19Another said, 'I have bought five pairs of oxen, and I am on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.'
20Still another said, 'I have just gotten married, so I cannot come.'
21The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.'
22'Sir,' the servant said, 'what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.'
23Then the master said to the servant, 'Go out to the roads and the country lanes and make them come in, so that my house may be full.
24For I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will taste my dinner.'"
