The Parable of the Friend at Midnight

Jesus tells a parable about a man who, in the middle of the night, asks a friend for three loaves of bread to serve an unexpected guest. The friend inside the house initially refuses to get up but eventually gives in because of the man's persistence. Jesus uses this story to teach his disciples about persistent prayer: ask, seek, knock – and the Father in heaven will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him. Luke 11:5-13

Luukkaan evankeliumi 11,5-13

5Then he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
6because a friend of mine has arrived from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him.'
7And suppose he answers from inside, 'Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are in bed with me. I can't get up and give you anything.'
8I tell you, even if he will not get up and give him anything simply because the man is his friend, yet because of his shameless persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs.
9So I say to you: ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.
10For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks the door will be opened.
11Which father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish?
τίνα δὲ ⸀ἐξ ὑμῶν τὸν πατέρα αἰτήσει ὁ ⸀υἱὸς ἰχθύν, ⸀καὶ ἀντὶ ἰχθύος ὄφιν ⸂αὐτῷ ἐπιδώσει⸃;
12Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
ἢ καὶ ⸀αἰτήσει ᾠόν, ⸀ἐπιδώσει αὐτῷ σκορπίον;
13If you then, evil as you are, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
