Micah's prophecy about the ruler from Bethlehem
The prophet Micah proclaims that from the small town of Bethlehem Ephrata will come a ruler over Israel, one whose origins are from ancient times, from days of eternity, and who will shepherd his people in the Lord's strength like a shepherd.
Miika 5,1-4
1But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too small to be counted among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient days.
וְאַתָּ֞ה בֵּֽית־לֶ֣חֶם אֶפְרָ֗תָה צָעִיר֙ לִֽהְיוֹת֙ בְּאַלְפֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה מִמְּךָ֙ לִ֣י יֵצֵ֔א לִֽהְי֥וֹת מוֹשֵׁ֖ל בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וּמוֹצָאֹתָ֥יו מִקֶּ֖דֶם מִימֵ֥י עוֹלָֽם׃
2Therefore he will give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers will return to the people of Israel.
לָכֵ֣ן יִתְּנֵ֔ם עַד־עֵ֥ת יוֹלֵדָ֖ה יָלָ֑דָה וְיֶ֣תֶר אֶחָ֔יו יְשׁוּב֖וּן עַל־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
3He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they will dwell secure, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth.
וְעָמַ֗ד וְרָעָה֙ בְּעֹ֣ז יְהוָ֔ה בִּגְא֕וֹן שֵׁ֖ם יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָ֑יו וְיָשָׁ֕בוּ כִּֽי־עַתָּ֥ה יִגְדַּ֖ל עַד־אַפְסֵי־אָֽרֶץ׃
4And he himself will be peace. When Assyria invades our land and treads on our palaces, we will raise against him seven shepherds, eight leaders of men.
וְהָיָ֥ה זֶ֖ה שָׁל֑וֹם אַשּׁ֣וּר ׀ כִּֽי־יָב֣וֹא בְאַרְצֵ֗נוּ וְכִ֤י יִדְרֹךְ֙ בְּאַרְמְנֹתֵ֔ינוּ וַהֲקֵמֹ֤נוּ עָלָיו֙ שִׁבְעָ֣ה רֹעִ֔ים וּשְׁמֹנָ֖ה נְסִיכֵ֥י אָדָֽם׃
