Paul's Ministry in Ephesus
Paulus arrives in Ephesus and meets some disciples who only knew John's baptism. He baptizes them in the name of Jesus, and when he lays hands on them, the Holy Spirit comes upon them, and they speak in tongues and prophesy. Paul preaches in the synagogue for three months, then daily at Tyrannus' school for two years, so that all Asia hears the word of the Lord. God performs extraordinary miracles through him, so that even handkerchiefs that had touched him healed the sick and drove out evil spirits. The seven sons of Sceva tried in vain to use the name of Jesus, but were overpowered by the evil spirit. Many turned away, confessed their deeds, and publicly burned their magic books, and the word of the Lord grew mightily.

1While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples.
Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ τὸν Ἀπολλῶ εἶναι ἐν Κορίνθῳ Παῦλον διελθόντα τὰ ἀνωτερικὰ μέρη ⸀ἐλθεῖν εἰς Ἔφεσον καὶ ⸀εὑρεῖν τινας μαθητάς,
2He asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you came to faith?" "No," they replied, "we have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
εἶπέν ⸀τε πρὸς αὐτούς· Εἰ πνεῦμα ἅγιον ἐλάβετε πιστεύσαντες; οἱ ⸀δὲ πρὸς αὐτόν· Ἀλλʼ οὐδʼ εἰ πνεῦμα ἅγιον ἔστιν ἠκούσαμεν.
3So he asked, "Into what, then, were you baptized?" "Into John's baptism," they said.
εἶπέν ⸀τε· Εἰς τί οὖν ἐβαπτίσθητε; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν· Εἰς τὸ Ἰωάννου βάπτισμα.
4Paul said, "John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was coming after him—that is, in Jesus."
εἶπεν δὲ Παῦλος· ⸀Ἰωάννης ἐβάπτισεν βάπτισμα μετανοίας, τῷ λαῷ λέγων εἰς τὸν ἐρχόμενον μετʼ αὐτὸν ἵνα πιστεύσωσιν, τοῦτʼ ἔστιν εἰς ⸀τὸν Ἰησοῦν.
5On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
ἀκούσαντες δὲ ἐβαπτίσθησαν εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ·
6And when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.
καὶ ἐπιθέντος αὐτοῖς τοῦ ⸀Παύλου χεῖρας ἦλθε τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ἐπʼ αὐτούς, ἐλάλουν τε γλώσσαις καὶ ἐπροφήτευον.
7There were about twelve men in all.
ἦσαν δὲ οἱ πάντες ἄνδρες ὡσεὶ ⸀δώδεκα.
8Paul went into the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly there, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God.
Εἰσελθὼν δὲ εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν ἐπαρρησιάζετο ἐπὶ μῆνας τρεῖς διαλεγόμενος καὶ ⸀πείθων περὶ τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ θεοῦ.
9But when some grew stubborn and refused to believe, slandering the Way in front of the crowd, he left them, took the disciples aside, and held discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.
ὡς δέ τινες ἐσκληρύνοντο καὶ ἠπείθουν κακολογοῦντες τὴν ὁδὸν ἐνώπιον τοῦ πλήθους, ἀποστὰς ἀπʼ αὐτῶν ἀφώρισεν τοὺς μαθητάς, καθʼ ἡμέραν διαλεγόμενος ἐν τῇ σχολῇ ⸀Τυράννου.
10This went on for two years, so that all the residents of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, heard the word of the Lord.
τοῦτο δὲ ἐγένετο ἐπὶ ἔτη δύο, ὥστε πάντας τοὺς κατοικοῦντας τὴν Ἀσίαν ἀκοῦσαι τὸν λόγον τοῦ ⸀κυρίου, Ἰουδαίους τε καὶ Ἕλληνας.
11God did extraordinary miracles through the hands of Paul,
Δυνάμεις τε οὐ τὰς τυχούσας ⸂ὁ θεὸς ἐποίει⸃ διὰ τῶν χειρῶν Παύλου,
12so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched his skin were carried to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.
ὥστε καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀσθενοῦντας ⸀ἀποφέρεσθαι ἀπὸ τοῦ χρωτὸς αὐτοῦ σουδάρια ἢ σιμικίνθια καὶ ἀπαλλάσσεσθαι ἀπʼ αὐτῶν τὰς νόσους, τά τε πνεύματα τὰ πονηρὰ ⸀ἐκπορεύεσθαι.
13Some itinerant Jewish exorcists also tried invoking the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, "I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims."
ἐπεχείρησαν δέ τινες ⸀καὶ τῶν περιερχομένων Ἰουδαίων ἐξορκιστῶν ὀνομάζειν ἐπὶ τοὺς ἔχοντας τὰ πνεύματα τὰ πονηρὰ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ λέγοντες· ⸀Ὁρκίζω ὑμᾶς τὸν Ἰησοῦν ⸀ὃν Παῦλος κηρύσσει.
14Seven sons of a Jewish chief priest named Sceva were doing this.
ἦσαν δέ ⸀τινος Σκευᾶ Ἰουδαίου ἀρχιερέως ἑπτὰ ⸀υἱοὶ τοῦτο ποιοῦντες.
15But the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize—but who are you?"
ἀποκριθὲν δὲ τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ πονηρὸν εἶπεν ⸀αὐτοῖς· ⸀Τὸν Ἰησοῦν γινώσκω καὶ τὸν Παῦλον ἐπίσταμαι, ὑμεῖς δὲ τίνες ἐστέ;
16Then the man with the evil spirit leaped on them, overpowered them all, and beat them so badly that they fled from the house naked and wounded.
καὶ ⸀ἐφαλόμενος ⸂ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς⸃ ἐν ᾧ ἦν τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ πονηρὸν ⸂κατακυριεύσας ἀμφοτέρων⸃ ἴσχυσεν κατʼ αὐτῶν, ὥστε γυμνοὺς καὶ τετραυματισμένους ἐκφυγεῖν ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου ἐκείνου.
17This became known to everyone living in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. Fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor.
τοῦτο δὲ ἐγένετο γνωστὸν πᾶσιν Ἰουδαίοις τε καὶ Ἕλλησιν τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν τὴν Ἔφεσον, καὶ ⸀ἐπέπεσεν φόβος ἐπὶ πάντας αὐτούς, καὶ ἐμεγαλύνετο τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ.
18Many who had come to faith came forward, confessing and disclosing what they had done.
πολλοί τε τῶν πεπιστευκότων ἤρχοντο ἐξομολογούμενοι καὶ ἀναγγέλλοντες τὰς πράξεις αὐτῶν.
19A good number of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in front of everyone. When the value was added up, it came to fifty thousand silver coins.[^1]
[^1]: A silver coin was roughly a day's wage for a laborer, so this sum represented an enormous amount of money.
ἱκανοὶ δὲ τῶν τὰ περίεργα πραξάντων συνενέγκαντες τὰς βίβλους κατέκαιον ἐνώπιον πάντων· καὶ συνεψήφισαν τὰς τιμὰς αὐτῶν καὶ εὗρον ἀργυρίου μυριάδας πέντε.
20So the word of the Lord kept spreading with power and prevailing.
οὕτως κατὰ κράτος ⸂τοῦ κυρίου ὁ λόγος⸃ ηὔξανεν καὶ ἴσχυεν.
