Rehoboam Builds Fortified Cities
After the prophet Shemaiah, on the Lord's command, warns Rehoboam not to go to war against his brothers in the north, the army returns. Rehoboam stays in Jerusalem and builds up a number of fortified cities in Judah and Benjamin, including Bethlehem, Tekoa, Lachish, and Hebron. He strengthens the fortifications, places commanders over them, and stores large supplies of food, oil, and wine, as well as shields and spears, to secure the kingdom.
2. Aikakirja 11,1-12
1When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he mustered the house of Judah and Benjamin—a hundred and eighty thousand picked troops—to fight against Israel and win the kingdom back for himself.
2But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, the man of God:
3"Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin:
4Thus says the LORD: You shall not march out and fight against your brothers. Every one of you, go home, for this thing is from me." So they listened to the words of the LORD and turned back from marching against Jeroboam.
5Rehoboam settled in Jerusalem and built up cities for defense in Judah.
6He built Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,
7Beth Zur, Soco, Adullam,
8Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,
9Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,
10Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron—fortified cities in Judah and Benjamin.
11He strengthened the fortresses, appointed commanders over them, and stocked them with stores of food, oil, and wine.
12In every city he placed shields and spears, making the cities exceedingly strong. So Judah and Benjamin were his.
