Sorrow Turned to Joy
In the farewell discourse, Jesus tells his disciples that they will weep and mourn while the world rejoices, but their sorrow will turn to joy. He uses the image of a woman in labor who forgets her pain once the child is born. Jesus promises that he will see them again and that no one will take away their joy. He encourages them to pray to the Father in his name, so that their joy may be complete.
Johanneksen evankeliumi 16,20-24
20Truly, truly, I tell you: you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn into joy.
ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι κλαύσετε καὶ θρηνήσετε ὑμεῖς, ὁ δὲ κόσμος χαρήσεται· ⸀ὑμεῖς λυπηθήσεσθε, ἀλλʼ ἡ λύπη ὑμῶν εἰς χαρὰν γενήσεται.
21When a woman is in labor she has pain, because her hour has come. But when she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.
ἡ γυνὴ ὅταν τίκτῃ λύπην ἔχει, ὅτι ἦλθεν ἡ ὥρα αὐτῆς· ὅταν δὲ γεννήσῃ τὸ παιδίον, οὐκέτι μνημονεύει τῆς θλίψεως διὰ τὴν χαρὰν ὅτι ἐγεννήθη ἄνθρωπος εἰς τὸν κόσμον.
22So it is with you: now you have grief, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.
καὶ ὑμεῖς οὖν ⸂νῦν μὲν λύπην⸃ ἔχετε· πάλιν δὲ ὄψομαι ὑμᾶς, καὶ χαρήσεται ὑμῶν ἡ καρδία, καὶ τὴν χαρὰν ὑμῶν οὐδεὶς ⸀αἴρει ἀφʼ ὑμῶν.
23On that day you will not ask me anything. Truly, truly, I tell you: whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.
καὶ ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἐρωτήσετε οὐδέν· ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ⸂ἄν τι⸃ αἰτήσητε τὸν πατέρα ⸂δώσει ὑμῖν ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου⸃.
24Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
ἕως ἄρτι οὐκ ᾐτήσατε οὐδὲν ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου· αἰτεῖτε καὶ λήμψεσθε, ἵνα ἡ χαρὰ ὑμῶν ᾖ πεπληρωμένη.
