The Question of Jesus' Authority
While Jesus is walking around in the temple, the chief priests, the scribes and the elders come and ask by what authority he does these things. Jesus answers with a counter-question: Was John's baptism from heaven or from men? They dare not answer, because they fear the crowd who regarded John as a prophet. Then Jesus refuses to answer them.
Markuksen evankeliumi 11,27-33
27They came again to Jerusalem, and as Jesus was walking in the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to him.
28"By what authority are you doing these things?" they asked. "And who gave you the authority to do this?"
καὶ ⸀ἔλεγον αὐτῷ· Ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιεῖς; ⸀ἢ τίς σοι ⸂ἔδωκεν τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην⸃ ἵνα ταῦτα ποιῇς;
29Jesus replied, "I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
30John's baptism—was it from heaven or from men? Answer me."
31They discussed it among themselves, saying, "What shall we say? If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why did you not believe him?'
καὶ ⸀διελογίζοντο πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντες· ⸂Τί εἴπωμεν;⸃ ἐὰν εἴπωμεν· Ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ· Διὰ τί ⸀οὖν οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ;
32But if we say, 'From men'—" They were afraid of the crowd, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.
33So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And Jesus said to them, "Then neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."
