The Levirate Law and the Sandal
A law concerning levirate marriage: When a man dies without children, his brother must marry the widow so that the firstborn son may carry on the name of the deceased. If the brother refuses, the widow shall go to the elders at the city gate. There she shall pull the sandal from his foot, spit in his face, and say, 'This is what is done to a man who will not build up his brother's house.' His family line shall be known as "the house of him whose sandal was pulled off".

5If brothers live together and one of them dies without a son, the widow of the dead man shall not marry outside the family. Her husband's brother shall take her as his wife and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her.
כִּֽי־יֵשְׁב֨וּ אַחִ֜ים יַחְדָּ֗ו וּמֵ֨ת אַחַ֤ד מֵהֶם֙ וּבֵ֣ן אֵֽין־ל֔וֹ לֹֽא־תִהְיֶ֧ה אֵֽשֶׁת־הַמֵּ֛ת הַח֖וּצָה לְאִ֣ישׁ זָ֑ר יְבָמָהּ֙ יָבֹ֣א עָלֶ֔יהָ וּלְקָחָ֥הּ ל֛וֹ לְאִשָּׁ֖ה וְיִבְּמָֽהּ׃
6The first son she bears shall carry on the name of the dead brother, so that his name is not blotted out of Israel.
וְהָיָ֗ה הַבְּכוֹר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֵּלֵ֔ד יָק֕וּם עַל־שֵׁ֥ם אָחִ֖יו הַמֵּ֑ת וְלֹֽא־יִמָּחֶ֥ה שְׁמ֖וֹ מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
7But if the man refuses to take his brother's widow, she shall go up to the elders at the city gate and say, "My husband's brother refuses to preserve his brother's name in Israel; he will not do his duty as a brother-in-law to me."
וְאִם־לֹ֤א יַחְפֹּץ֙ הָאִ֔ישׁ לָקַ֖חַת אֶת־יְבִמְתּ֑וֹ וְעָלְתָה֩ יְבִמְתּ֨וֹ הַשַּׁ֜עְרָה אֶל־הַזְּקֵנִ֗ים וְאָֽמְרָה֙ מֵאֵ֨ין יְבָמִ֜י לְהָקִ֨ים לְאָחִ֥יו שֵׁם֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לֹ֥א אָבָ֖ה יַבְּמִֽי׃
8Then the elders of his city shall summon him and speak with him. If he stands his ground and says, "I do not want to take her,"
וְקָֽרְאוּ־ל֥וֹ זִקְנֵי־עִיר֖וֹ וְדִבְּר֣וּ אֵלָ֑יו וְעָמַ֣ד וְאָמַ֔ר לֹ֥א חָפַ֖צְתִּי לְקַחְתָּֽהּ׃
9his brother's widow shall step up to him in the presence of the elders, pull his sandal off his foot, spit in his face, and declare, "So shall it be done to the man who will not build up his brother's house."
וְנִגְּשָׁ֨ה יְבִמְתּ֣וֹ אֵלָיו֮ לְעֵינֵ֣י הַזְּקֵנִים֒ וְחָלְצָ֤ה נַעֲלוֹ֙ מֵעַ֣ל רַגְל֔וֹ וְיָרְקָ֖ה בְּפָנָ֑יו וְעָֽנְתָה֙ וְאָ֣מְרָ֔ה כָּ֚כָה יֵעָשֶׂ֣ה לָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־יִבְנֶ֖ה אֶת־בֵּ֥ית אָחִֽיו
10And his family shall be known in Israel as "the house of the man whose sandal was pulled off."
וְנִקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל בֵּ֖ית חֲל֥וּץ הַנָּֽעַל׃ ס
