The Temple Tax and the Stater in the Fish
In Capernaum, those who collected the temple tax asked Peter if Jesus paid the tax. Jesus explained that kings' sons are free, but to avoid causing offense, he told Peter to cast a hook into the sea. In the mouth of the first fish, Peter would find a stater to pay the tax for both of them. Matthew 17:24-27

24When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax came to Peter and asked, "Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?"
Ἐλθόντων δὲ αὐτῶν εἰς Καφαρναοὺμ προσῆλθον οἱ τὰ δίδραχμα λαμβάνοντες τῷ Πέτρῳ καὶ εἶπαν· Ὁ διδάσκαλος ὑμῶν οὐ τελεῖ τὰ δίδραχμα;
25"Yes," he said. And when he went into the house, Jesus spoke first: "What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect duties and taxes—from their own sons, or from others?"
λέγει· Ναί. καὶ ⸀ἐλθόντα εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν προέφθασεν αὐτὸν ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγων· Τί σοι δοκεῖ, Σίμων; οἱ βασιλεῖς τῆς γῆς ἀπὸ τίνων λαμβάνουσιν τέλη ἢ κῆνσον; ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν αὐτῶν ἢ ἀπὸ τῶν ἀλλοτρίων;
26"From others," he replied. Jesus said to him, "Then the sons are exempt.
⸂εἰπόντος δέ⸃· Ἀπὸ τῶν ἀλλοτρίων, ἔφη αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἄρα γε ἐλεύθεροί εἰσιν οἱ υἱοί.
27But so that we do not offend them, go to the sea and cast a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. Open its mouth and you will find a coin. Take it and give it to them for me and for you.
ἵνα δὲ μὴ σκανδαλίσωμεν αὐτούς, πορευθεὶς ⸀εἰς θάλασσαν βάλε ἄγκιστρον καὶ τὸν ⸀ἀναβάντα πρῶτον ἰχθὺν ἆρον, καὶ ἀνοίξας τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ εὑρήσεις στατῆρα· ἐκεῖνον λαβὼν δὸς αὐτοῖς ἀντὶ ἐμοῦ καὶ σοῦ.
