Under King Jehoshaphat's religious reform program in Judah, the Levite Azariah was appointed as one of those who were to travel throughout the cities of the kingdom and teach the people the law of the Lord. In the third year of his reign, he, along with other Levites, priests, and the king's officials, was sent out with the Book of the Law of the Lord to restore and strengthen the people's knowledge of the covenant with God. This systematic teaching effort was a central element in Jehoshaphat's reforms and showed how royal authority and religious leaders worked together to renew faithfulness to the Lord. According to Chronicles, this reform work resulted in the fear of the Lord falling upon the surrounding nations, and Judah experienced a period marked by peace and growth.

Sent out to teach the people the law of the Lord

Asaniah was among the Levites whom King Jehoshaphat sent out in his third year of reign to teach the people the law of the Lord in the cities of Judah. Together with the king's officials and priests, they traveled around carrying the Book of the Law of the Lord and teaching the people. This formed a cornerstone of Jehoshaphat's religious reform program, aimed at strengthening the covenant relationship between God and his people.

7In the third year of his reign he sent his officials—Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah—to teach in the cities of Judah,
8and with them the Levites Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tob-adonijah; and with them the priests Elishama and Jehoram.
9They taught in Judah, having with them the Book of the Law of the LORD. They went around through all the cities of Judah and taught among the people.

Effect of the Reform: Peace and Prosperity in Judah

As a result of Jehoshaphat's faithfulness and the extensive reform work in which Asaniah and the other Levites participated, the fear of the Lord fell upon the surrounding kingdoms, so that they did not wage war against Judah. The kingdom then experienced a period of peace and prosperity.

10The terror of the LORD was upon all the kingdoms of the lands surrounding Judah, so that they did not make war against Jehoshaphat.
11Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat gifts and silver as tribute, and the Arabs brought him flocks: seven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred goats.
12Jehoshaphat kept growing greater and greater. He built fortresses and storage cities in Judah,
