Hammedata (Haman's father)

Ancestor of the Agagites

Pakkosiirtolaisuusc. 500 BC

Hammedata was the father of Haman, the powerful Persian official who sought to exterminate the Jewish people. As an Agagite, he was likely a descendant of the Amalekite royal house, which explains the deep hostility between his family and the Israelites.

Mentioned as Haman's father

Hammedata is identified as the father of Haman the Agagite when Haman is introduced in the book of Esther as a high-ranking official under King Ahasverus.

1After these events King Ahasuerus promoted Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, advancing him and setting his seat above all the officials who were with him.

Agagite lineage

The term 'Agagite' links Hammedata and his family to the royal house of the Amalekites, who were Israel's ancient enemies from the time of the wilderness wanderings.

10So the king took the signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.

The family in a royal decree

Hammedata's name is mentioned in the royal decree that gave the Jews the right to defend themselves, serving as an identification of the enemy Haman.

5She said, "If it pleases the king, and if I have found favor with him, and if the king thinks it right and I am pleasing in his eyes, let an order be written to revoke the letters devised by Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews in all the king's provinces.
